Exclamation Poor Battery Life? PUT THAT STYLUS AWAY!

While experimenting with the 3.3 rom I noticed something very interesting with acbPowerMeter. Try this...

Set backlight to 50%/5min (on battery of course)

Close all apps except ActiveSync/DirectPush (if applicable)

Run acbPowerMeter and observe results for a couple minutes

Use softkey to reset acbPowerMeter--observe results

Use stylus to reset acbPowerMeter--observe results

NOTICE ANYTHING SURPRISING?

Tap around on the screen while observing power consumption

I had NO IDEA... no wonder the Treo 700's have such good battery life!

Wow! Looks like about 87mA of current to use the touch screen! I guess that's a combination of the touch screen resistive elements and the CPU power to interpret it. I'm guessing a single tap now and then probably doesn't use much, but for those who use block recognizer are probably eating up some power.

Yea for keyboards! Banging about 4 clicks per second only uses about 2mA. Big difference!

acbPowerMeter is just cool, ain't it?

I'm betting it's almost all CPU power - the cpu drops down to 100mz on idle, and has to come out of that to process every tap. It's only 15-20mA more then the totally idle but backlight on value, so it's probably not ramping up to full speed.

So use anything but the stylus if you're looking to last long!
