I’ve got a Sprint PPC6700 and yesterday I finally upgraded from the original ROM to the latest one (2.06.303), eliminating junkware in the process (I had also eliminated junkware a while back on the original ROM). Everything worked just fine, but there’s some good and some not so good things occurring so far. The largest noticeable improvement, for whatever reason, seems to be that my EVDO connection stays connected much longer than before. Previously, my connection would need to be redialed if I was idle more than about 20 minutes or so, the on the newer ROM it seems to hold it much longer than before. Anyone else notice this?
On the downside, the same phone ringer that I used previously doesn’t seem to be nearly as loud as it was before, even at the highest setting on the phone. Anyone have a good fix for increasing the ringer volume?
Next, my handset volume is also reduced. I know others have complained also, but is there a good hack or tweak to improve that on the Sprint phone?
Last, on a game I play, PocketSpades, it’s not nearly as responsive as before. I expected the phone to be by and large more responsive than before on most functions based on what I had read, and it’s generally been OK but really not that much faster. However, I didn’t expect to see slower functions on most anything, so this surprised me some. Any others have similar experiences with slower functions than before? Thanks in advance.
That thread is 7 months old and has almost 1000 posts in it. I searched within it and found nothing of use with the reduced handset volume. Hopefully someone has better information than what's contained within that thread.
Hey Guys,
I have been reading the AKU 3.3 Forum and i figure it is a good thing to have for PPC6700 besides some minor issues which can be corrected.
I have the the 2.06.303 official rom update installed from Sprint and yes EVDO stays always on for some reason. I have been trying to figure out how it can be reverted back but no luck. Theres a registry hack which only enables you to manually disconnect (also shows connection time):

but still, EVDO doesnt automatically disconnect after a certain idle time. Any developments in this domain? Thanks...
Are you sure you have the official Sprint version? If so, where did you get it? I hadn't heard anything about that coming out. I do know there are several versions of customized roms but nothing from Sprint.

This seems to be a function of the "new" radio firmware - it tends to hang onto idle connections longer. Mine never disconnects, for example, even without the 'always connected' reg setting

This should not have changed, unless you changed the phone volume - that's the one with the phone image when you move the vol up/down in today...

Same volume setting - there is no "11" but you CAN change to a difference voice codec by doing some very low level stuff - and that makes it a bit clearer, possibly a hair louder... ppcgeeks.com is moving servers this morning, I'll post a link later

You might want to google for some of the tweaks out there - glyphcache might help it, for example.
There are a lot of very significant improvements to moving to one of the unofficial "AKU 3.3" ROMs - you might want to consider that at some point (but sadly, you'll need to wade through 100s of posts on this and the ppcgeeks.com site.)
Thanks. I've resolved most of the issues. The low volume on the ringer was a user error on my part (I picked the wrong "louder" ringer I'd used previously). And my phone volume seems to have greatly improved by changing the registry value HKCU/ControlPanel/SoundCategories/InCall/InitVol to 5. I've seen others saying that shouldn't work, but it seemed to work for me.
I'm also strongly considering going to AKU 3.3, but I haven't really found a good list of what it actually provides. Can someone list just a few of the nicest features?

Well I logged into my sprintwireless account and there sprint offers the rom as a download 2.06.303 with radio rom 1.27. This is basically still the AKU 2 I guess.. just few developments for radio. but EVDO staying always on will possibly drain battery faster. Im still kinda waiting for a more stable version of 3.3 or maybe 3.5 with the problems solved.
