I took my phone to Verizon complaining about the battery life. They said that I needed to get a replacement phone as well as replace my battery at no cost to me. I said OK, but now I am worried that the replacement phone will have a new ROM that may prevent me from using my phone to tether my data service to my laptop.

Am I justified in my concern? I don't really know how to check this without actually registering the phone on the network. Do any of you know how I can do this? I don't want to send in my old phone that has this ability unless I am sure my new one will function similarly.

Or maybe I can load the ROM of my choice on there?

I've searched all around the forum for answers, but couldn't find anything addressing this specific concern. Any help is appreciated.

I had the same concern a little over a month ago, when my phone's loose usb port caused me to get a replacement phone fron Verizon. I got a new phone that already had the new rom on it and it continues to work great with tethering and everything. I think you'll be pleased.
