Can't receive push email while sync'd to computer! Help!

Hey guys, noob to the community, but not a noob to Pocket PC. I was able to hack the crap out of this phone, and for the most part, I love it! I have the unlimited data plan, and have the verizon software set up to check most of my email accounts and push my mail to me. However, when I sync the phone to the computer, the EV-DO antenna shuts off, and I no longer receive pushed email. I tried changing the network settings on the phone, but then lost the connection to the computer completely, and it stopped charging my phone. Which was the entire point for hooking up to the computer in the first place. I've got a billion miniUSB to USB cables and only one AC Adapter that I don't feel like carting with me everywhere I go. If I could get the sync process to not turn off my EVDO, this would be great! Thank you!

Try running ActiveSync 4.5(beta). You can send/receive while tethered using the latest version.

I did that, and it had the same effect. Once in the cradle, active sync took it over and wouldn't let it connect out using the EVDO connection.

I got so pissed, I uninstalled Activesync, and now it sits in the cradle, EV antenna on, charging.

Oh well, guess I can't sync at work.

I don't have a solution for your work/sync problem, but I do have a suggestion so that you can still intermittently use Activesync - disable USB in Activesync (Uncheck File/Connection Settings.../Allow USB Connections) before connecting you phone. It will charge but leave the EVDO connection active. You can quickly re-enable USB for syncing on your PC.

If you think about how IP works, you can see why the phone does what it does. How would it know which traffic needs to be routed via the various network interfaces it has? To avoid trying to solve this (difficult) problem Microsoft took the simpler path of routing all traffic through a single active connection. My previous post should let you toggle that connection on and off from the PC side.

So, you aren't trying to sync with your work Exchange server? Sorry, I thought that was what you were doing. If it was, then the new 4.5 beta would sync over your PC's LAN connection. Microsoft disabled the over-the-air sync by design when a hardline LAN connection is present.

No, not exchange, just gmail and a couple other non-exchange personal emails.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Yes, I understand their logic, and normally I'd agree with it, except in this case. I guess they assume that if you're sitting down in front of a computer and the thing is hooked to a cradle, then you should be able to receive your email on the computer. I just like to keep my personal email which I receive on the phone completely seperate from my work email system.

Thank you though, I do appreciate your effort.

I found the best thing to do in this case, should anyone else have this same particular problem in the future is to install active sync, let it update the USB drivers, and then uninstall activesync but leave the USB drivers. Then, assign the network connection that it creates on the computer a static 169.254.x.x address (so it can't connect to the internet) and then it sits in the cradle with the EVDO radio on, charging. I usually only sync at home, so this isn't such a big concern.

Again, thanks everyone for their help!

Did you check "allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" in the activesync (v4.5) connection settings?

Give it a shot and see if it works.
