Joystick repair gone wrong "Dont do this at home"

Well I had bought two 6700's pretty cheap as they had diferent problems with them. Took them apart mixed and matched some things and got one of them running very smoothly. Well this one is missing the little rubber nub on the joystick. So I thought, "Why not just lay a drop of super glue in it and when it dries it will never fall out." So I carefully placed a drop of super glue in the empty spot before bed last night so it would fully dry.

This morning I get up and grab it and realize the joystick doesnt have as much play in it as yesterday. Take a closer look and see most of the glue is gone. The joystick over the course of today has steadily gotten worse to being pretty well non functional. At least the surrounding buttons work til I get home to put in the button pad from the other one.

If anyone has a bricked 6700 they want to sell pm me. These things are very easy to take apart and swap parts. Or if you know somewhere where parts could be bought too.

I have had to replace my "pad" a few times. I always put the glue on the pad and not the stick, then I place the pad in and it works like a charm.

You know there's been a lot of bashing going on whenever someone says "search first" when they reply to a thread. In this case if the op would have searched for "super glue", he would have found out that someone else accidentially discovered that super glue and the joystick don't mix several months ago.

The moral of the story... Sure, the op may have had his ego bruised by getting a trite "please search" reply, but he also wouldn't have a bricked phone either.

I used an eraser that fits most mechanical pencils, but naturally it keep wearing down and needs to be replaced. I recently replaced it with a foam pad constructed from a .98 cent visor I bought from Walmart ( crafts dept). I then took a 9 volt battery and used the small connector to forge the pad.

For what it's worth..same experience here. I dabbed a light bit of CA adhesive and stuck my original pad back on the joystick..let dry and now the stick isn't as responsive as it once was. It takes a very deliberate press to select. This happened months ago and got better over time, but not by much. I didn't use a lot of glue either. I bet it doesn't fall off again though.

Make sure to use the battery as sort of a cookie cutter. I then cut the foam in half since it was too "high" on the stick. Next, place the pad on your finger, bottom up, place a dab of crazy glue on the pad. Next you will take the 6700 and lower it from the top and press the pad in place, not too hard though!

Let it dry and have fun!

I always search the bejeezes out of the forum, but I was telling a story and not asking a question. Next time I want to share I'll make sure I'm not repeating something.

BTW, I took apart the joystick and scraped the glue off of it, and got it going again.

remember, glue can leak. have it leak away from the phone not into it. have it dry facing down not up.

The problem is, on the PPC6700 the barrel of the joystick is hollow. Under the pad you will find a hole and any glue applied there can run down into the innards of the switch. As discussed, it is best to apply a small amount of glue to the pad when replacing it, rather than dobbing glue on the joystick itself.

Red face Gem to replace pad?

I recently heard someone bought a package of gems used to 'decorate' cell phones. They said the 4mm size fit perfectly on the joystick to replace the missing pad. Has anyone tried this?

Thumbs up Creepy Crawlers...

Lovely UTSTARCRAP said I need to pay and send in for service...for a frigging rubber button!
I used my kids Creepy Crawler kit and made my own buttons! I had a host of colors to choose from... I used a drill bit that was a tad smaller than the joystick hole and drilled into the side of one mold. I can even texture it, add grit, then cook it. A perfect rubber button!

Worked like a champ! On the glue part, put the super glue / Gorilla Glue on a paper plate then use tweesers and dip it into the glue then place in the joystick.

No issues~

I have the same issue. No Sprint stores in the area have the phone or any parts in stock so no luck there. I'm not paying a $50 deductible just to get this thing replaced. I even called UTStarcom. They said they would repair at no charge but said it would probably be weeks before I would get the phone back.

I've always thought the joystick was a bad idea. Hopefully we'll never see it in another phone anytime soon. I also have a coworker with the PPC6700 and his rubber piece came out as well. He gave up on trying to get it replaced.
