Questions / Problems with 6700 after a months use.
First off, I have searched for answers to some, but not all of these questions on the forums, but have not found anything that was able to solve.
That being said...
After a month of using the ppc-6700 on Sprint service I've got some issues that I can't seem to get worked out and would like to know if anyone else has had this trouble.
An incoming and outgoing call will always be disconnected within the first couple seconds, but when they call back or I call back right away, it works. It's always the same thing, talking..talking... click, disconnected. It happens every time I make a call or someone calls me, for the first instance of the call, but once it's done it, the phone usually lets me finish the second call.
Tapping trying to open notes, browse to a directory, or opening text messages results, 85% of the time in each tap highlighting a new folder as if I was dragging trying to select all folders. No matter how much I tap, the rate at which I tap the screen, nothing will let me open a note, text message, or directory. This happens more often then not and a soft reset doesn't always fix the issue. (I have to soft reset a couple of times a day.)
The keyboard works about 30% of the time. For example, if I open up the keyboard and then click on contacts and send a text message (for example) sometimes it will allow me to type in the text area of the message. If I click on contacts and send a text message, then open up the keyboard, same effect, sometimes it will work, some times it won't. If you tap (sometimes rather hard) on the back of the device the keyboard will kick on, sometimes it takes a soft reset. There's no common factor to it not working.
Anyone know of anything that might resolve these? Be it a firmware update that maybe I didn't recieve, something alone those lines. All the software I have installed is on the storage card and even without that in there these troubles presist.
What third party software do you have loaded on the card? Have you done a hard reset yet? Do you have the insurance? Has it had all of these problems from day 1, or have some or all of them developed over time, and if over time, in what order? What ROM version are you running? Are you using a blutooth headset, and if so which one? Have you dropped this phone? Was the phone new when you got it? Where did you purchase the phone?
What third party software do you have loaded on the card? I had games installed (age of empires, virtual pool, all of which I have since uninstalled. I also had installed but removed since, tcmp and divx codec.
Have you done a hard reset yet? I have not done a hard reset.
Do you have the insurance? I have a replacement plan yes.
Has it had all of these problems from day 1, or have some or all of them developed over time, and if over time, in what order? To the best of my knowledge they were all present from day one or from day one of using that particular feature.
What ROM version are you running? OLD version. 1.03.00 WWE
Are you using a blutooth headset, and if so which one? No Bluetooth
Have you dropped this phone? Thankfully no, I've not dropped or been rough with the device.
Was the phone new when you got it? It was sold as new at the shop, however the refurb status was YES (as in it was a refurb). I don't mind this, usually refurb items have already had problems that were fixed. Usually.
Drastic times call for drastic measures. Here's what you need to do.
1. Upgrade to the latest ROM version. You can find it by searching here or just digging around the www.utstar.com web site. That will not only take you to a more stable ROM but will also hard reset the phone in the process, which is important to do at this stage of the game because you're trying to determine if your phone hardware is defective. A hard reset will erase all of your stuff off the phone and make it "like new" so make sure you back up your stuff first (sync your contacts/calendar/etc with activesync if you use it and manually copy pictures/documents/etc. from the My Documents folder to your SD card or to your PC via activesync. Then install the new ROM.
2. Once the rom upgrade completes and the extended rom installs, go through and test each one of the three problems you mentioned. If any of them still exist (especially #3) then your phone is defective and Sprint should replace it under warranty.
I am a little concerned that Sprint would sell you a refurbished phone as new. They should not ever do that so you may want to speak with a manager there. Bring in your receipt along with the phone and get them to give you a new phone--after all you paid for a new phone. Refurbished phones may contain issues that were not apparent during the refurbishment process so it's usually best to get new if you can.
If the issues go away post-hard reset then you know it was something you did to the phone to cause them (either a hack gone wrong, buggy software, etc.). Try adding programs one at a time to see if you can determine what's exactly causing the problem.
Alright .. runing the new firmware and upon clicking "Tap here to set owner information" the keyboard would not function. Same as before. Tried to double, triple, 4x tap on a note on the SD card and it just kept selecting and deselecting the folder and didn't open it up.
Sounds like it's time to place a call into the Sprint center.
I can tell you you need to exchange that phone. Also i would mention to them that it says refurb status. sprint stores should NEVER sell a refurb phone as new.
Here's an update, for any interested or having a similar issue.
The phone now no longer disconnects. It did for maybe a day after the rom update, but now no more. Good News there.
File Explorer still gave me problems. Where every folder I tapped on highlighted as if control on a regular keyboard was being held down (you know the functionality), so I installed Total Commander 2.0, no more trouble. Works great.
The keyboard now works 98% of the time. I don't complain about that.
I'm now happy with the phone like I'd expect to be and don't have anything negative to say. All things considered, it's still a really cool device ... now if only Windows live search beta would have traffic information for Indianapolis ... ahh well!
