I wanted to share this story with all of you having WModem and USB tethering woes.
I very recently got a used 6700 specifically to be a modem for my laptop. It came with an older version of WM5, with all the Verizon goo attached. I couldn't get tethering to work. WModem kept giving me the OPEN COM PORT finger, so I decided to do a hard reset and skip the customization load. The same problem persisted. No matter what I tried, I got an OPEN PORT ERROR, the phone wasn't recognized as a functioning USB device, or ActiveSync would stop working.
Soooooooooooooo, despite some trepidation, I decided to try to load the new AKU2 ROM myself. Went without a hitch, and I skipped the Verizon goo initially. But now, WModem was not in the Programs menu. I spent days trying to figure that out, and even though I found WModem.exe with Total Commander, I was getting the same kinds of errors. Another hard rest was in order.
I loaded the V customizations and still ended up with the same issues, AND still no WModem in the Program menu. Hack after hack, soft reset after soft reset, I couldn't make the damn thing work. I got rid of AciveSync 4.2 and tried 4.1. I even got rid of AS all together. Same issues. I tried everything. Starting WModem connected to the PC. Not connected. With the phone radio On, and with the phone radio Off. After two weeks and probably 7 hard resets, I downloaded the PDANet trail version.
It is the finest piece of software known to PPC'ers. However, that's not the point of my story.
I was on the road, bored, and decided to try WModem one more time. IT WORKED WITHOUT HASSLE, and has worked everytime I've tried it since. Every single time. I made no changes to the 6700. The only thing I have to remember to do is disconnect ActiveSync.
I don't know what PDANet did, but it's significant. I'm gonna buy it, just because they made me happy.

Reason: I'm an idiot
Interesting that you had WModem listed under Programs. I had to place it there myself under the old and new ROMs. The .exe file has always existed in the Windows folder, but to my knowledge it was always necessary to manually create the shortcut in programs, and follow these steps to prevent the Wmodem shortcut from disappearing. Maybe PDANet did that for you? Anyway, glad it works
Sorry, I need to clarify. Early in this struggle, back with the original ROM the phone came with, I was able to put the shortcut or the program in the Programs folder. I don't remember which. I didn't do anything weird, just followed directions I found here. With the new ROM, I can't get WModem to show up in Programs without causing errors. I did get it to work once or twice before installing PDANet, but there wasn't any rhyme or reason why it worked one time and not another.
PDANet did not put WModem in Programs, it just made it work. However, I like PDANet. I think I'll hard reset one more time, skip the V goo, put the hack in so Verizon can't tell I'm tethering, load PDANet fresh, and call it done.
