How to do over the air sync with your own server

Thanks to someone here, I took a look at funambol (an open source
SyncML server with associated client plugins for Outlook, Smartphones etc).

I have to say that so far it RULES. I am going to delete active sync from
my machines. Ding-dong the witch is dead !

Funambol just works (except for encryption, presumably a bug
in the version I'm using). It syncs notes, tasks, contacts and
calendar over TCP/IP. It will use either WiFi or CDMA on the
VX6700. You install a server (I have it on our linux mail server),
and clients for all your devices (I use two PCs with outlook,
an iPAQ PDA and the XV6700). Each client pushes and pulls
its changes to the server. They all stay in sync, all done over
the network.

This is exactly the product that Microsoft should have made
but did not. Activesync is the spawn of the devil by comparison.

This makes the VX6700 so much nicer to use because I can
keep it my pocket at all times (never forget it when I go
to a meeting, plugged into the cradle). But yet it can keep in
sync.

I know M$ is the devil, but not everything they do is that bad. I have been using MSFP/DirectPush with my Exchange server for a while now and have never had any issues.

You have an OpenSource mail server, so this solution works excellent for your enviornment, but remember that Exchange rules about 80% of the Corporate enviornment (not talking about major ISP's, mail services, etc.).

That being said, I am going to have to try this out Linux is definately something I need to learn more about as OpenSource products keep getting better and better!

Thanks for the find

Even if you have Exchange, the MS server sync solution is not ideal
because it won't sync any private stores you might use. For me
handheld devices are a personal thing, that I don't really want wrapped
up in a corporate IT blanket. I'd like more control.

This is where I hate the part about switching to MAC. *sad face*

We can 'barely' sync as it is.

Does the Funambol server have to run on the mail server? I would like to implement this for myself, but do not have access to our company mail server. I would like to run it on my desktop and have it monitor my Outlook PST and sync changes with my laptop and PPC. Is this possible?

No, funambol server can run on any machine, even on your desktop if you want.

Well, a day or two using funambol and it isn't so great.
Like many open source projects it's spoiled for want of a
happny 'o' tar.

Problem #1 is that nothing ever gets deleted!
I delete an appointment on my device, it stays on my desktop.
Vice verse. Same if I move an appointment. Now I have two.

Also, there are a few things that _require_ active sync e.g.:
Delta airlines schedule app, OneNote Mobile.

Problem #2 is worse: I did an active sync to catch up on
those things that aren't handled by funambol. Now I have two or
three copies of everything I added in the last two days. And a
bunch of old things have come back.

Typical sync/replication problems.

So, it would seem that you must use either only funambol,
in which case you have to put up with broken/lame sync
(no deletes, move becomes a split etc), OR you have to
not use fnambol , because active sync horribly breaks it.

Another thing it doesn't do is audio notes sync, which I use a lot.

So it looks like I will be deploying my own personal Exchange server
in a vmware instance, just to get remote sync that works over the
network. <sigh>

btw the way it sync's the outlook pst is by running a client on your desktop
that groks the mapi data directly and pushes it to the funambol server.
The server can run on any machine : desktop, some server box, whatever.
