Disable Wifi Permanently

Does anyone know how to disable WiFi for good on this device? I would like to do this because it is a security concern at my place or work. Also people don't realize they turn it on and it drains power quick.

Thanks,

You also posted here 6 days ago. http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...t=Disable+Wifi

I don't think there is a way to do it without removing hardware, which I wouldn't recommend...

Water treatment should eliminate any wifi concerns.

I'm sure there's a way to do it by editing the registry. This isn't exactly "permanent" in the literal sense, as a sophisticated user could download a registry editor and change it back, but this is cumbersome to do. So if you just want to avoid accidental usage of wifi, this would be your best bet.

I asked this same question some time ago. Does anyone have a good key to delete/modify to do this? I'm afraid of changing a key that is tied to wifi (by name or something) and disabling some other function that I need. I have the regedit tool and looked at several wifi entries and am unsure which one is best. Thanks.

These users are by no means sophisticated users; I will do some toying with the registry to see what I can find. But in the mean while if anyone figures out how to disable/hide the wifi option, please don’t hesitate to post!

Thanks again!

(I'll post if I find anything out.)

For those who care

This is what I found out.

First: PLEASE BACK UP THE REGISTRY!

Second Go to:
\HKLM\ControlPanel\MyCPL\3\WLANMgr.exe - Modify Binary Data. In the Value Name field, change File to breakFile. (This will allow you to easily reverse the setting if need be) That will disable the Wireless LAN Manager under start\settings\connections (the icon will still be there until you reboot)

Third Go To:
\HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\Wlan\DeviceName - Modify Binary Data. Same thing here, change the Value name from DeviceName to breakDeviceName. This will disable the WiFi ability in the CommManager.

I think that is a sufficient way to “permanently" disable the WiFi for anyone interested in doing so.

Known Side Effects: After Rebooting, the Wireless LAN icon disappears in Start/Settings/Connections. However… it returns to haunt you in Start/Settings/System.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Enjoy uh... not having WiFi

Great job!

Just remember to always do this when you have to hard reset

1 question:

What registy editor would people recommend - I'm trying to use RegEditCe, but after I edit the names, they are back to their original value when I go back and view them. thanks.

I used the PHM Registry Editor. Download and install! Open .cab file with File Explorer on your device.
Attached Files
File Type: zip regedit.Rpr_ARM.zip (31.2 KB, 11 views)
