LG HBM-730 bluetooth headset + PPC-6700

Just picked this up this afternoon @ Best Buy. I originally wanted the Plantronics Discovery 655, and was going to just find a headset for my wife. I got it for her and it worked soooooo good. I went back in the store and got me one too.

It's super small!
Personally I think people look like clowns when I see them walking around with this big huge star trek beam-me-up-scottie Bluetooth headset on the side of their head. I know they think they look important or feel "rich", but to me they look silly. So that was my main motivation for the Plantronics 640, because it was very inconspicuous. But when I saw the LG HBM-730, It seemed like it was 1/2 the size, and @ $69 bucks, I couldn't lose.

It paired to our phones with no problem. Found it instantly without a hitch.

Nice and loud too. When I bought the first one, I simultaneously bought a Motorola H300 (the one that takes an aaa battery) to see which one my wife wants the most, then planned to return what she didn't want. We tried the H300 in the parking lot 1st and she was like "Uhhhhh, if I have to keep it I will". It was staticy on both ends, about twice as heavy & much bigger then the LG. One major problem was the sound was too low. Not good for what we do. We then opened the LG HBM-730 and gave it a try in the parking lot. It was an instant hit with her. She loved it, and so did I. It was louder, lighter & much better looking because it was smaller and looked more professional. I packed the H300 back up and went in and bought me an LG for my phone too.

The built in Voice Speed Dial worked flawlessly. We had previously recorded our names into our phones days ago, yet & still the LG headset recognized all the names we've called with 100% accuracy thus far.

The ringer is pleasent, it's BT 1.2 and it carries all the features you would expect from a modern day Bluetooth headset. I also walked about 40 feet from my phone and it still worked (although it got staticy). *smile*

About an hour ago, I went searching for this headset on the web at places like eBay, and it's so new that nobody is selling it there. All the webstore vendors that has it listed in their online catalogs have them "OUT OF STOCK" because it's so new. I think LG released this to go with their new Chocolate phone, but it goes good with my PPC-6700.

I recommend this headset to anybody who is looking for a new one. I will report back in about a week to let you know how it works for regular day to day usage.

link to lg's site -- click on accreesories then bluetooth then the HBM730 to view it (for whatever reason a direct link to the 730 page doesn't work).

The link worls for me. I'm looking at it now. They use Javascript to get to the product page so I can give a direct link, but it surely works.

And what's odd is the LG website says: Please note that this accessory is currently not available for purchase.

And because you can't find it on eBay and no webstores have it IN STOCK then maybe Best Buy screwed up and started selling them before they were supposed to. the sales rep told me it was "Brand new latest model" but he said he's had it on the floor for about 2 week. Another sales rep said its only been there 1 week.

Either way, I bought two of 'em and have it sitting here with me. And they have about 3 more sitting on the shelf @ Best Buy on Pico just west of Sepulveda in Los Angeles.

I guess me and my wife got lucky.

If you can provide a link you should--it’s a great idea when providing a review of a new product to provide a link to the manufacturer’s page for it so that others can easily view what you're talking about. Also, there is a thread devoted to reviewing bluetooth headsets here. In this forum, it’s a good idea to make your post within an already existing thread rather than start a new one--especially if there is a thread directly on point. Also the Best Bluetooth thread is really popular and that’s where people are going to look for a review like yours.

I have the 640, how much smaller is the 730? Does the 730 go in your ear like the 640 or just sit against it like the Motorola? How is the volume on it (a major complaint for 6700 users with their headsets) is it loud enough? Does it have annoying flashing lights on it? How does it sound to the people you call--what sort of feedback do you get?

As I stated in the thread right before yours, LG employs javascript to display their products and therefore a link could not be provided to the manufacturer. And some people could not see even that. I do not know pdaphonehome's policy on displaying non-sponsoring links to retailers, so it's best I didn't do that.

Also, I am well versed in thread/forum etiquette, and I've learned that sometimes when a single post with a broad topic reaches 37+ pages and is located in a subforum that averages over 100 viewers at any given time of the day....well, sometimes it better to break off and begin a new topic with a more direct subject, yet similarly related, such as this one. Moreover this LG model headset has never been mentioned on this huge website, anywhere, so I felt it warranted it's own post.

*smile*, but thanks for your concern.

Now, back to our regular scheduled programming.....

The 730 is physically about 1/4 shorter and 1/4th thinner then the 640. The 640 is designed like a cylinder pill (which is good looking to me), but the 730 is design like a flat paddle boat. Because of this shape and size, it looks very small when worn on the average sized head. For women with very small heads (like my wife) it looks "correct" for lack of a better adjective. This fits inside your ear, but does not use the rubber gummy-bear inserts. instead it has a round pod that goes in your ear. It has a removable ear hook so if your ear accepts it, you can just stick it in and call it a day. The volume is good thus far. I called a friends cellphone and got his voicemail using my 6700 phone and I had to turn it down because his outgoing message was too loud....and I come from a background of thumping music & loud recording studios, so loud for me is TOO LOUD for most. There are absolutely NO annoying 'geek' lights on this. Only a single led behind a phone mask that does a quick double flash every 5 seconds or so. I have to wait a while before I can even tell it's turned on. It pairs with the phone in about 5 seconds after you turn it on. With my limited conversations thus far, I can't really report on how it works with others, but after this week is over, I'll be back to tell all.

How about battery life--the 640 lasts all day and comes with a AAA battery operated portable charger, also it has a mini usb adaptor so that it can be charged off of the 6700's charger--on the down side it has an annoying tendency to slip out of its charger without warning and thereby fail to charge. Although I like my 640, I'm ready to replace it with something smaller and without a geek light.

"instead it has a round pod that goes in your ear."

Can you describe this pod--is it like an earbud? Does it work? I don't like the 640's "rubber gummy-bear inserts."

Oh, no offense intended by the way but we get a lot of newbies who don't know the customs and rules of posting and it seems to me to be more polite to come right out and say what the custom is rather than to flame some poor guy or gal the day after they join the forum--since you had such a new registration date I thought you fit into that category--on the other hand some people are hardened veterans of other forums (I was) or lurk for months and months before posting (I did) so you never know--nevertheless my first thread got closed (and rightfully so). If you stick with this forum you will see just how many newbies post new threads on old topics instead of searching for the existing threads on point--I try to be nice about it and help the person onto the right track--others will just flame right off the bat. So long ramble, the point is don't take offense at my officiousness, I'm one of the nice ones.

I totally understand your second paragraph. thanks for setting me straight.

Battery life.....the LG lasted all day yesterday, about 30 minutes worth of talking, so I haven't gauged it for continuous talk time yet. I get more busy as the week goes. Today is tuesday, so we'll see.

As far as power options are concerned, the Discovery 640 rules. That aaa battery charging system is pure genious. And that mini-usb plug is more genious. That's the reason I wanted one because I could leave the headset in the car and on the charger all night every night and not worry about it ever being dead. Alas, the LG 730 is yur standard run of the mill internal battery with a home charger that uses some proprietary plug type. I struggled with this, but the size and 'styling' of the unit outweighed the power options. Yesterday we went to breakfast at a restaurant and after the waiter took my order, he stopped for a moment and said "I didn't know they come that small! (pointing at my headset) ok, i'll be back with your tea." I felt good about that, considering as a waiter, then he probably has seen every type of bluetooth headset there is. *smile*

Yes, the earpod is nothing more then an earbud. IDENTICAL shape to the standard earbuds you get with a new Apple iPod.
