will I get charged for data by Verizonif I don't have a data plan and only use wifi??

I was just at the Verizon Wireless store a couple hours ago all ready to upgrade my phone to the XV6700, but when I told the technician that I wasn't ready for a data plan he looked at me like I was crazy. I explained to him that I was planning to use my school/home's (more or less free) 802.11 network.

Now I had always thought that if i used my own wireless router I could do without the ridiculously expensive data plan, but the technician seemed adamant that even though I would be using my own bandwidth on my own wireless router I would be charged for the data I downloaded regardless. Obviously when I heard this I was dumbfounded and could not believe Verizon would charge someone for downloading something using someone else's bandwidth/service. I looked around on the forums that seem to reaffirm the fact that home wi-fi services don't seem to incurr data charges, (http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...a+plan+charges) but I would really appreciate a confirmation or perhaps a first hand account of someone who uses the pay-per-kb plan. Thanks a lot.

Not unlike Sprint techs, the Verizon people don't know squat. They can't charge you for date that you get over your own wifi network. You can also disable the evdo connection to be sure that no data charges happen.

YOu might wnat to look in to one of the 1x RTT EVDO disabbleing hack, becasue I didn't get the datta plan and sometiems when the wifi gets lost for a sec, the phone will dial up instead and Data is expensiv i paid $5 or more for 300kb or so Rediciluous, so you mgiht need to alter the Dial up number from #777 to say #77seven jsut so you can use it if you really need it

thanks guys, i just needed to know i could use wifi and not be charged. now when you disable EVDO, does that mean it wont be able to download data via 1xRTT also? or do i have to call up Verizon to cut off data from their end?

Thanks again guys

I would call Verizon and ask them to disable all data if you don't have an unlimited plan. This way you are sure your phone won't "dial" the data sevice in the background.

After that, use Wifi all you want, it won't cost you a dime from Verizon.

EDIT: To answer your question, if you disable EVDO, it will disable all data. No way to differentiate EVDO/1x data (at least I'm pretty sure). Data is data from a provider standpoint. Disable it and you've disabled both EVDO and 1x.

One thing to add. When I asked sprint the exact same question, the guy told me I would not be charged for data received/sent over wifi but he did tell me to keep in mind that downloading picture/video mail to the phone would have to go through their servers and would incur charges though.
