In order to keep tomegun's Opera Mini thread clean I have started this one.
My question is basicaly what the title states. I am looking for some input on good alternative web browsers. I know that Netfront and Opera Mobile are available but I was wondering if there were any others out there.
I know that Google comesback with some results but wanted to get some feedback on others that people are using and could suggest.
One idea I've had for a while, but never had time to implement: creating a server-side app that combines a virtual instance of Firefox hardwired to a tweaked, optimized VNC server for people with the ability to host server apps of their own on a publicly-accessible IP address.
The general concept is that you'd launch the tweaked/streamlined copy of VNC client on the PDA, which would establish a session with a server-hosted copy of VNC+Firefox, with the instance's virtual window sized at whatever could be displayed on the PDA. All the heavy lifting would be done by the remote browser, and the PDA itself would only have to act as the view. With 160kbit/sec internet access now common, this could be a nice workaround to the problem of limited speed/memory (but fast network connection) in a PDA phone. It could do everything a full-blown PC could do (Java 1.5, flash, DOM, etc), yet run as a locally-lightweight app client.
Thunderhawk by BitStream is an awesome browser, have never had the problems I have with the others not being able to access certain sites etc..onl downside is it is a pay service, apx $50.00 year. Well worth it for my uses though! It optimises sites for your handheld and the speed is great. It is also scalable to three different resolutions as well. Give there free trial a try and you will see if its for you..

There is minimo http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/ but it is so freaking slow on the 6700 (and many other devices) that you probably can't use it as your regular browser.
I have been using Opera Mobile for a while now and am fairly happy with it. It is much better than PIE or the PIE add ons.

Have you run into this issue they have posted on their website?
"Note for users of devices with left slide out keyboards:
Bitstream has discovered a possible conflict that occurs if you launch ThunderHawk, and then open or close the left sliding keyboard during the browsing session. ThunderHawk engineers are working to resolve this problem and will issue an update when it is fixed. In the meantime, keep the keyboard in one position (opened or closed) for the duration of your ThunderHawk browsing session."
I don't want to try this browser until they have fixed this issue, since I often interact with web pages quite a bit and toggle back and forth.
I have tried everything but Net Front.
Thunder Hawk is great, but expensive.
Opera beta was good but buggy. (may be more stable now with the actual release)... same as minimo.
Skweezer works for some things and it's free.
PIE is lousy by itself so I tried Multi IE and then PIE Plus.
I ended up buying PIE Plus because I liked the way it works (tabs and shortcuts) and what it does (makes pie bearable).
Every one is different so try them all and see what you like!!!
Good luck.

I have been thinking of NetFront. I was following a very long thread here over the last couple of weeks and it sounded as though it could run Java code where none of the other browsers really could. It did not have the usual hassles of trying to find plug-ins etc., that work in the widest variety of web sites (and are not too buggy or hard to install). Has anyone found this to be the case? Can you log on to your on-line banking site for example?
Did Thunderhawk every fix the keyboard issue that would lock the phone up if you opened it after launch? Tabbed browsing?
It was a good browser but still buggy as of a few months ago when I checked it out. Especially considering the premium price.
I tried Thunderhawk for a few days...one word comes to mind, strange.
It is cool how it turns your PPC screen into an 800x600 desktop, but navigation is lousy. There is virtually no way to know you have clicked on a link. It just loads in the background. Also, does it work in Portrait mode? I couldn't seem to get it to work.
I tried to use it over my WiFi connection and it wouldn't load anything. As soon as I turned WiFi off, it worked fine. Strange.
I dunno, for the sky-high price (crummy subscription model) I prefer other browsers/enhancements for the PPC. I guess TH has it's audience; if it was a one-time charge affair, I may buy it just to have around, but I'm not adding another monthly expense!
I was wondering if someone could give me some helpful insight. My ppc6700 device will not allow me to view some webpages..I always get a message saying that there is a problem with my browser or something to the fact of it not being supported. What could this be? I have not done any upgrades to my phone at all since purchasing it in June06'. Can anyone recommend upgrades that I need to obtain?
More than likely you will need a different browser to view those pages. For instance, I cannot view my banks web pages through PIE. If you need to view these sites a lot, you could try Opera, Netfront, Thunderbird, or others.
Mickey - you can also look for the hack to "tell" the other web pages you have a different browse version. Do a search, or look at the hack documents in the 6700 forum.

I have been using Opera Mini 3.0 through Intent Java application. This has been the best browser I have used on a ppc. It is extremely fast. There is no other browser that can touch it right now. It loads almost every page in full within seconds. Also, it is made for one handed use so it works great with just the joystick. Once you try this browser you will never use another one again. And it is free. This is how ev-do should feel!
