Marsware WeatherPanel AutoUpdate Data Service Staying On After autoUpdate

I just downloaded the MarsWare WeatherPanel application and I must say i am very impressed. I have tried some of the other weather apps and this one just blows them out of the water, however; I have a question.

1. When I set the connection settings checkboxes so the program will "Auto Update Data" and "Establish Connection" every 1 hour the program will automatically do the #777 and connect to Sprint. The application will then update the data and the radar maps but after updating the application the data service doesnt shut off automatically and it stays on.

The first few times I manually updated the data the "EV icon with the two arrows" on the top of the screen dissapeared and the comm manager didnt show the data service as a running service. Lately, whenever I do any updates the data service stays on after doing the update and doesnt automatically shut off. If the phone does an update every hour and turns on the data service and doesnt shut it off automatically does this wear the battery down faster because the data service is running even if I'm not transferring anything? Also, is the program supposed to shut down the data service after an update or was this just a weird coincidence? I know it did shut it down the first few times but now it doesnt anymore.

When you say "it doesnt shut off".. how are you determining this? if those two little arrows are dimmed and not bright, then its not really connected and yer ok.

I don't have "Establish Connection" checked and mine updates every 30 minutes. You may also want to check the the circle thing on the far right-hand side of the today plugin - if it's red it's updating. - sheureka

What I meant was that if I click the "circle thing" or comm manager (whatever it is called) the communication manager opens up and I see the phone icon with the two arrows lit up green. If you click it then it will say stopping data service or something like that. I always keep going in there and clicking it to stop the data service because I thought it might wear down the battery but Im getting tired of doing that every 30 minutes!

Yes, I have noticed that on the WeatherPanel that the two blue arrows light up with the bottom one being red while it is updating.

After ithe WeatherPanel app updates, the two arrows on the top of the phone go from being colored in and white to not colored in and grey with a small 1X or EV to the top left of them. It was my guess that since they arent colored in that no data is being transferred at that moment but Im just not sure if that still wears down the battery any more than it would if it wasnt on at all even if no data is being transfered.

I thought that just because it was on that it might wear down the battery like WIFI will do to ya so I thought I'd ask and make sure before I let it sit there like that and I have a dead phone after 3 hours into the day.

Its my understanding that I have to check 'Auto Update Data' and 'Establish Connection' to update the data. If I dont click Establish Connection I dont think it updates unless Im on WIFI or if my data service is running but I have been always shutting that off since I dont know if that wears down the battery life even when not in use.

P.S. I have another post right below this or something that a few members share some links to have animated radar maps for the WeatherPanel which I think totally kicks @$$.

Thanks

I don't check the "Establish Connection" box because I don't want it waking me up in the middle of the night to download radar maps. As soon as other data is being loaded in the morning it starts downloading data again, and unless I put it in airplane mode it goes on schedule all day. - sheureka

What do you mean by you dont want it waking you up in the middle of the night to download radar maps? If the phones screen is turned off which I think means the pda is turned off but the phone is still on, that the data wont update?

How does it download data throughout the day then because I always lock my screen and press the button on the top when Im not using the phone so the pda turns off or whatever to conserve battery. Im talking about tapping the button on top not holding it so the backlight just dims.

Sorry, I just didnt totally understand why it wouldnt update at night but during the day it does.

Thanks
