[Apologies is this is a retread...I tried to search and nothing was obvious to me]
I just got a new 6700 and installed the latest ROMs. After setting it up, I've discovered a lock-up problem that may be of interest to the group. The issue is with the wifi control software in the new ROM.
My Router (SMC 2804WBRP-G) allows me to run with both WEP and WPA at the same time. If I set the router to this, the 6700 detects the WPA and connects just fine with the PSK and I am able to browse the internet (et al). The problem comes when I try to disable the wifi. As soon as I hit the "turn off the wifi" button either in the bubble or the CommManager, the screen goes black. Upon soft reboot, there's a 50/50 chance that the screen will be faded. If it is, I have to hold it up to the light in order to get to the backlight control tool to toggle the setting to get the backlight to come back on. Once back on, the system is totally unstable and slow. The wifi is comes back on and continues to work but there's no way to shut it off. Putting the unit into standby causes a crash that looks like standby (dark and the phone light blinks) but the unit is really dead. I could go on.
After a trying a hard reset with no change, it occurred to me that I could break the connection from the router side. Without the signal coming in, the wifi gave up and the the system went back to stable. I was then finally able to turn it off and delete the connection. Thinking the problem was in the connection settings, I set it up again with the same results. Next, I turned off encryption and [huzzah!] everything worked normally. Finally, I set the router to 'WPA only' and the problems didn't return.
I realize that most people's routers don't have this option and even fewer use the "both WEP and WPA" option. But I think it's good to know that the WIFI software has this kind of power over the KERNAL. Also, that it is inherently evil.
BOTTOM LINE: If you're seeing wonky behavior, put the wifi on your checklist of possible reasons.
