I have been using PPCs for a while now, and have changed many a theme on a WM 2003 device, as well as created some. I have had my 6700 since January, and I occasionally try to change the theme but then get frustrated and give up.
I know that sounds really stupid, but every time I install a new theme or try to make any changes to my today screen image, etc, all I get is the WM 5.0 default blue. Like I said, half the time I'm too busy to care, because the phone is so awesome anyway, but I started thinking about it today, and it bothered me again.
Anyone else have this problem? Is it related to a piece of 3rd party software or something? I looked through the forums, but couldn't find anything related to this specifically...
I feel very "special needs" right now, considering how many other hacks and things I've already managed to implement... (^_^) and this still stumps me.
I have no answer for you - and this is the first time I've heard of this problem so I'd like some more information. Do the themes come up when you first select them and then go away? Or can you not select them at all? Have you tried selecting the theme that comes with the phone (Guava)? With more information I'm sure somebody will figure it out. - sheureka
Yeah, I've tried the Guava theme, and the same thing happens. Themes appear in the list and never get applied. It's really weird. I can see them and choose them, but it always shows up as that blue default. I hope someone can tell me something... thanks -
Okay, let me get this straight. You go to "Settings", "Today". In the theme selection box you move to the desired theme name and select it with the stylus or press the joystick. Then you press okay to close the today screen and no timer image comes up. So you (ok) close the "settings" window and the today screen is the same as when you started. Is that right?
goto this site. all the themes are free and they do change the way the whole theme looks. also you can download the theme generator onto your computer and then change the theme to however you want it. Hope this helps.
Yeah, DJ, thanks for the tip. I've tried all that, though, and it's a bust. Been to that site. lots of nice stuff. Played with the generator. Nada.
Rip777s: that's exactly it. I have built themes myself, used other people's themes, always the same results.
It'll bother me for a while, then I'll forget about it. Then I'll start thinking about it, and go nuts for a little while again. It just doesn't make any sense...
Is anyone else having this problem or do I have the honor and distinction of being the only one? (^_^)
Try this - install a theme (*.tsk) file on your storage card - then go to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Today/ and check to see what it says for Skin. If there's nothing there, add a Value of Skin\\Storage Card\*.tsk. If there is something there, then change the Value to the theme you want to use - then soft reset and see what happens. - sheureka
whenever i put the theme in the phone and highlight it , it just stays as windows default im also having al sorts of problems, just wanted to know to the original poster if you updated you phone and how would you know if you need the update, the device info on my phone is
I did update my phone as soon as the new ROM became available, months ago, and I'm almost positive I had this problem from the very beginning, and reading your post, I'm thinking I did. I don't think the new ROM has anything to do with it, as the problem exists in both new ROM and old ROM states.
How would you know if you need the update? You don't really NEED the update, but it does improve several aspects of your phone's functionality. Search in this forum for threads dealing with changes to the phone from the new ROM, and you'll see what I mean.
sheureka - haven't tried your suggestion yet... I assume I'd need something like Total Commander to do it though? Otherwise how would I drill down to that registry level?
Well, I tried it, the regedit, and I got nothing. I know I did everything right, too, so there's no doubt in my mind that something weird is going on behind the scenes on this phone... I'm starting to feel glad I do nightly backups, who knows what might fail all of a sudden if I can't even change the freakin' color of my screen?!
But...
I have a second 6700, that was my business partner's, since he switched to a new device, so I can run tests on it... I had cloned my system using Spb Backup and loaded it onto the second phone. I noticed when I tried to change the theme on the test phone, it did the SAME THING.
So, I have deduced, after much head scratching and fist shaking, that it's something in my system, and the software I have installed, or uninstalled and left fragments of somewhere, that is causing this problem...
So do I even want to bother with the painstaking surgery involved in determining which one it was? Probably not...

Reason: Addition
FWIW, I have this same problem with some themes as well. For instance, the Spb Extended theme pack only works for two themes. The rest just go back to the default blue. I did have success with Kokkos' liquid blue theme so you might want to give that a shot. Other than that, I haven't really looked into the problem.

I finally buckled and backed everything up and just did a hard reset. I tried uninstalling some individual pieces of software first, to see if it was possibly one thing or another, and then just figured, what the hell. I knew the only way I was going to be happy was if I regained complete control of everything in there, so I just got all my cabs ready for reinstallation and registration keys and such, and went to town.
Needless to say, the problem is solved, and themes change easily now. I feel better (^_^).
Thanks to everyone who offered help! I appreciate your assistance!
Well I'm having the same issue with my VX6700, I just got it last week, and just messing around seeing what programs I like, then wiping it out. So I used the Clear Storage tool under "Start->Programs" to wipe the PPC out and went to install previously working themes. I couldn't get any of them to load. (Juni's theme pack) So I did a hard-reset which did not help either. I even re-installed the ROM update again.
I eventually reverted to a backup I made with spbBackup, and my PocketPC Themes work again, but now I have all this stuff installed that I don't want. I prefer to mess around, then just wipe it completely as many programs seem to litter the registry, and leave stray files and folders.
I go to thinking on my drive home from work that perhaps when you align the screen maybe I didn't align it right. Doing another reset now and will post later if it works.
--Edit nope didn't work. Guess I'm stuck with some that work, and most don't.
