What the concensus on these devices as a phone. I've gone through two and neither has the signal strength in most area's as a Razor or LG 4650 I have on the same Verizon service. Is this usually the case.? If so is there a hack or tweak?
The Razor and LG will generally show two bars, when at the same time the 6700 will not show any, but does notindicate there is no service.
My EV service seems to work well in all area's that it is available, regardless of the phone signal quality.

I have seen killer signals where other phones just dont work. I must say 3 bars rarely ever show up. But there are no provider tweaks (Cingular More Bars More Places - Lie, They Up The Signal SO That 10% Shows 1 bar and 20% Shows 2 and 50%+ Shows 3)

I have an xv6700 and saw 0,1,2 signal bars most everywhere except the Verizon Store... but then I installed the Version 2.x update from UTSTAR available at http://www.utstar.com/handsets/Downloads.aspx (select model from drop down box) and since then my signal strength has been much much better often seeing 3 and 4 bars.
With Sprint PCS, I've had a hard time finding any phone that works well at home or work (had to install 1900mhz repeaters to make sure there were no more dropped calls at both locals). Doh! That said, I think this is just a location problem as Sprint seems to have a great signal as well as excellent clarity once I get close to most major roads in the area. On that note, Verizon has the same signal issues in my area and costs more than twice as much per month for similar plans. Anyway, for the price and all Verizon's network hype, you'd think they would be rock solid all over coastal so cal as well as the entire US for that matter! Also, Sprint's EVDO runs faster and in more areas round here for some reason. Go figure...

What was the actual performance of the 6700 in terms of voice quality, dropped calls, missed calls? I don't know that the number of bars means as much as it used to.
I have had Sprint for a long time and I have used my 6700 in a variety of locations. I am agreeing with others here about the bars not meaning much. My apartment shows no bars of signal (sometimes 1), but I still get 600-700 kpbs on EVDO and I have never missed a call. Everyone I know leaves vm if they don't reach me and I have never gotten a vm with out the call. Also, I have never had a dropped call with it. (Oklahoma may just be a good place for cell phones though because I have maybe had 2 dropped calls my whole time with Sprint-4 years now) Also, my Sanyo 8200 wouldn't hardly make calls from my apartment on 1 bar. That 8200 was the worst phone I have had yet but maybe it was just a defective phone. Oh-and btw, I have had my PPC-6700 since November 2005.
I get good EVDO reception in practically all of San Diego except where I live, which is in a cell 'hole' as the service reps of several different companies call it (Cingular, T-Moble and Sprint).
On my 6700, I can get a phone connection but it will die usually within a minute. EVDO reception is very spotty and gets disrupted also. Here's the thing: I also have a Merlin 620 EVDO card for my laptop (I have a combined phone and laptop account with Sprint) so I get to compare.
The laptop card fares way better than the 6700 using EVDO. I've compared the two without the booster antenna for the Merlin card attached of course.
Having said that, if I could attach that same booster antenna to my 6700 I'm fairly confident that I'd get a much better signal, as I do on the laptop, but after all the scare stories here about an attached antenna causing the 6700's internal antenna to die, I've refrained from ordering the adapter that would enable me to attach it. Life.
Essentially looking forward to the 6800, 6900 or whatever the Rev A compatible 6700-like device will be called, because surely they'll have fixed the antenna problem by then, right? Nex
6700:
Dropped calls
Choppy calls where calls will drop but do not disconnect
Phone does not receive incoming calls but I do get a voice mail indication with no missed call indication

I've found that I get a good signal when other people who have Treo600/650s are getting nothing. At least as good as my wife's Fusic. Much better call quality and reliability than my 6600.
Now if I could just get the ringer to sound when the call comes in!

I've found signals to be much better on my 6700 than my 6600 and it's better to look at db value on the maitenance screen instead of going by the number of bars you have because those bars vary between different phones. -72db may show 4 bars on one phone while the same value may show 1-2 bars on another phone.

Well to get back to the focus of the post. While most folks are saying the phone works great, I have a problem and I don't seem to have it with a razor or LG that are sittinig right next to the 6700. I have replaced the 6700 through Verizon and the new one works identically. So I don't think its the service.

I have a Sprint 6700 - not sure if it differs from the Verizon version in this particular aspect... That said, in terms of RF performance I think the 6700 is good but not great.
My 2 previous phones were a Sanyo 7400 and a Treo 600. They were both better performers than the 6700 in terms of ability to hold a weak signal, etc. Now to be fair, the Treo 600 and Sanyo 7400 (like all Sanyos) are known for having exceptional RF performance - so saying that the 6700 isn't as good may not paint the most accurate picture.
