Has anyone had trouble with the Dynex retractable USB cable??

I just got a new laptop and tried to connect my PPC6700 with a Dynex retractible USB cable/cord. It is having a problem connecting to Activesync. It begins to connect then fails. I tried to use the USB cradle and the same thing happened. I would really like to sync the phone with my laptop from now on but I can't get it to work.

Another possible problem is Active sync. The link for 4.1 on Microsoft's site leads to the 4.2 download. I was told this version was a beta a couple of weeks ago. Additionally, I upgraded my phone about two weeks ago too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had problems with the retractable USB cables not working. Try a regular one and see if it works.

The USB cable must be USB 2.0 rated. I just looked up the Dynex cable and it doesn't indicate that it is so I'll wager its not. Using a non-USB 2.0 cable gives all kinds of weird errors.

Remember, I did say I've had the same problem with the USB cradle that came with the phone too. As we speak, my phone is in the cradle, connected to my desktop (I'm typing on). I connected the cradle to my laptop and couldn't connect properly with Activesync. I just checked and I'm running Activesync 4.1 on my desktop and 4.2 on my laptop.

ActiveSync is fairly 'touchy' until it is setup and run the first time. After that I found you want to ensure that you aways connect the USB cable to the same USB port on your PC or Laptop. Most likely the ActiveSync install has been corrupted do to the intermittent connectivity when you tried the Dynex cable. I would go thru the 'fixes' for Activesync issues and only use the provided cable until you resolve the Activesync issues.

I know this sounds like a cop out but I spent 2 weeks getting my Activesync straight and I'm an MCSE/A+/CCNA/CCNP "blah" "blah" "blah" Tel Com/Networking Consultant.

(DON'T TRY IT UNLESS YOU ARE VERY VERY COMFORTABLE EDITING YOUR REGISTRY AND READY TO TRASH YOU OS LOAD CAUSING YOU TO TOATLLY RELOAD THE PC AND POSSIBLY LOSE ALL OF YOUR DATA CURRENTLY ON YOUR PC AND YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK)

I worked with AllTel's Tech Support (4 Hrs) and MS Tech Support (3 Hrs) without success. Ultimately it took some serious Regediting to dig out all the keys related to all the Activesync install/uninstall attempts to prevent a complete reload of my OS. In doing that I figured out that the USB connector is easily corrupted by multiple installs or attempts to change the USB port used after the initial install. This corruption is/was caused when you do the initial connection to a 'new' USB port and the PC/LT 'auto' installs the USB 'driver' for the 'new' HW (6700).This seems to 'confuse' AS because now it 'sees' the same device in multiple 'locations' and doesn't know which to 'talk' to. IN doing the Regedit thing I found 5 Reg Keg entries for the "Windows Mobile-based Device" each point to a different USB port which really confused me as I only have 3 USB ports on my PC.

One thing I will tell you is that once I completely removed all possible Reg Keys related to AS and the USB port/Hardware ID assignments and started from a new 'clean' install of AS and let it take over night to complete the initial sync everything has been 'Good to Go" since. (I have over 500 Contacts and 700 'events' in my calender so it really took overnight for everything to 'convert' and sync the first time.) I changed the method when I added the LT as the second device and only allowed one 'information type' (selectable under Options) at a time to sync. As each completed, I added 1 more and resynched until all types were included and a sync was completed. It still took the Calender and Contacts about 30 mins as each was added for the initial sync.

Translation 'information type' - Contacts, Files, Favorites, etc.

If you want to try the Regedit think PM me and I'll give you some pointers but again I repeat DON'T TRY IT UNLESS YOU ARE VERY VERY COMFORTABLE EDITING YOUR REGISTRY AND READY TO TRASH YOU OS LOAD CAUSING YOU TO TOATLLY RELOAD THE PC AND POSSIBLY LOSE ALL OF YOUR DATA CURRENTLY ON YOUR PC. AND YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK

Thanks. I'm actually an MCSE too. I finally got it to work and mentioning what USB port to use is interesting. I have four - two on both sides - and I know I used one of the ports on the left side. I will remember that if I need to connect to the laptop; I have started to sync with bluetooth.

Can some kind soul please post the Radio Shack SKU for this item? It apparently is no longer listed at radioshack.com, and a call to my local Radio Shack was a no-go unless I could supply a SKU.

Thanks.

Roy
