How to convert the .mp4 video file created from the 6700?
I'm trying to open/convert the .mp4 movie file i made with the camera of the 6700 but I'm getting all sort of errors when i tried to open it with many video editing programs. I've tried with multiple programs like virtualdub, ace video converter, cucusoft but keep getting "wrong video size" or can't open this kind of file ect...
The only program i found thus far that can read is "MP4Cam2AVI_v2.22" but when it convert it to .avi i loose the sound
Playing 6700-recorded videos (mp4s) on regular computer?
So I made a bunch of videos and transferred them from my 6700 to my regular computer. They all ended with the extension mp4. So once they were on my computer, I double-clicked one. It tried to open in Winamp, but did nothing but load the title, I clicked 'play' and nothing happened.
I updated to the newest version of Winamp, same result.
So I told it to open in Windows Media Player, in case Winamp's just too stupid to handle mp4s. WMP gave the warning "WMP doesn't recognize this file, but may be able to open it anyway...do you want to try?", so I click yes. The movie plays (with no sound I could hear).
Well that's all right, no sound, but at least I can see the video. So I play another video the same way...same warning message, but it played the video fine. So then I clicked the box telling me not to warn me anymore.
After that the videos I tried opening crashed WMP. I restarted but they just kept crashing.
So what do you guys recommend for watching your 6700-recorded videos off of the 6700? Is mp4 an obscure format or something? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them later. I've never understood the whole codec thing...why wouldn't they be installed when you install the player, or update the player? I never know what codec to look at or how to look for them.
Is mp4 just too new? I would've thought it was the video counterpart to mp3, but mp3's have been around forever.
Okay, I downloaded an MP4 codec...now the videos play, but still no audio. When each one starts, WMP queries some server to try to find some codec (even though i have the MP4 codec installed), then says 'error finding codec'. Is this an audio codec that it's trying to find? If so, what sort of codec should I be looking for here?
I avoided the whole issue by recording in .avi
If I decide to send a vid to someone I don't want them to have to go through all this cr*p just to view it.
Here is a freeware pack that installs all the codec's (video and audio) to play back this kind of stuff. It includes xvid, divx, mp4 etc... it'll use windows media player classic to play it all:
A way to look at codec's is a 'language' translation tool. Video is encoded with a format and you need the codec to play it back. A codec can also be used with audio e.g. AC3 which is the surround sound.
Enjoy and this is my first post as I am a lurking, and very happy, 6700 owner =)
Oh yes, and further to your statement that "I don't know what codec to use", this is a freeware application which you can right click and it will tell you what codec's were used for video and audio. So if you don't have it you can go get it.
I'll get around to downloading the other mentioned stuff, I'm just slow. Hopefully the codecs or that other program will give me my audio back.
Along the same lines, is there a particular format which is best for recording in? I left it MP4 cz that was the default, but are any of the other formats better for video size/choppiness, etc.?
Also, is there a video editor which would let me do simple things like edit out chunks of the movies, or delete the audio track, or rotate them if I record them portrait-style? Perhaps if I switch to AVI like tony did, I'll find much more software to choose from...there seemed to be slim pickings for mp4 support.
Thanks for the comments, Kenny, very helpful, and I'm honored to be the excuse for your first post. I'll try your codec download later. Thanks everyone! Great forum.

thankyou =)
As I am also a new user to the phone I do not know about the other choices in format the phone will record. it realy becomes personal choice. afterdawn is a site dedicated to this type of topic and I would recommend investigating things more there. Any format can be changed to another with potential loss in quality of signal. To a previous posters comment avi can be played quite easily on mac`s and pc`s. If u need a large files then you have to go down the compression route of which xvid (divx used to hold the crown) is the latest popular choice.
You will be able to find all sorts of software there some freeware and others you`ll buy to help with linking. editing and converting video.
The built in camera on the 6700 records video files in MPEG-4 format. I realize that you can change the pref so that it saves in MJPEG-AVI also, but my question is about mp4 files. The Windows Mobile version of Media Player seems to handle the mp4 files with no problem.
Why in the world then can Windows Media Player 11 on WinXP not play these mp4 files? I have QuickTime 7 installed, which can play these mp4 files, but I'd like to be able to open them in WMP. I've scoured the internet looking for codecs for WMP that might allow it to play these files but have come up with nothing but outdated, inconsistent & inaccurate information.
It seems the WMP Mobile never talked to the WMP guys when they were writing this software. Has anyone had any luck viewing mp4 files from the 6700 on their PC?
I agree with the above, I just ran into the same issue, and asked myself the same question.... why would a video recorded on a Windows device need Quicktime to play it on a PC, ironic!
