Newb With TONS OF QUESTIONS - PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok, the background story is this. I had a Motorola i870 since Nov '05 that was taking a beating from too many drops. I've had insurance the whole time as well, so this is what I did. I made a claim on the i870, it costs $100 to replace it with a new model. I will be selling the new model on eBay for probably $300 with all of my accessories. Then I called to "cancel" my service with Nextel (so they would throw great offers at me) and I proposed a switch to Sprint and the PPC-6700. They waived the $200 termination fee, offered the PPC-6700 to me for $225 + $50 Sprint Credit (Basically $175), and I got a 1000 Fair and Flexible Package + Data Package for $75 a month. I'll probably look into insurance as well.

So besides the fact I'm basically making money for switching services ( ), I'm only 19, but I have great use for this phone. I work full time in import/export and use Outlook for most of my emails. I'll be using the Caldenar and Reminders features sparingly, but I'm looking for a little assistance with the features of the phone I am very interested in.

Before you flame me, I would like to say I have done a ton of research on the board.
I know most of the registry hacks (Camera, Cache, MMS, etc),
I know you need a 3rd Party Stylus to actually stay in place,
some good Grip placement to keep the battery in place,
and so on and so forth.

I wanted to know a couple things before I ventured around with the phone and start fiddling with the registry.

1) I know I need to make a back-up of my registry. IF MY PHONE DOES BRICK ON ME, HOW CAN I RETRIEVE THE SAVED REGISTRY DATA? I type in the command line when the phone turns on? What if the phone WON'T TURN ON after I've made a registry change? I'm brand new to the Windows Mobile and PPC world, so I'm a little nervous.

2) The hacks I am most interested in are the MMS, both Cache hacks, disable sent tct msg notifcation pop-up, the annoying keyboard pop-up, Internet always on the Camera FPS hack and other various registry changes. I've read and read and read and I don't believe there are any problems related directly to these hacks. I know there are problems reported with using PIE off of your memory card or combining the Internet Usage Stats/Internet Always on hacks. Are there any other essential hacks I have missed?

3) Third, I understand that Opera Internet Browser is the way to go. Where can I download this at? Didn't see any links for it during my research. Should I combine this specific program with anything else to maximize optimal performance?

4) Do I need a program to ACTUALLY CLOSE PROGRAMS (NOT MINIMIZE) when I press "OK" or "X", or is there a registry hack? This was one of the issues I was confused with.

5) Are the pay programs that include all of the registry hacks + other features worth the money and avoiding the hassle?

6) What programs should I store on my memory card, and what programs are essential to keep stored into the phones memory?

7) HOW DO I GET SMALL FILESIZED RINGTONES? I saw a post of someone saying they use .wma ringtones in a certain instance, changing the mhz or something. I can't re-locate the post after I first read it! DOH! Also, what program can you use to convert mp3's into wma's? I don't think you can with Wavepad.

I am considering buying a USB TV tuner card for my Dell Desktop at home and configuring it with my digital cable. I would be using orb on my PPC for Digital Cable playback, possibly DVR playback, FM Radio playback and the other features Orb allows. I noticed there are other programs you can use besides Orb to stream this stuff to your PPC. Is orb the best program out? Is the playback quality on the PPC worth the cost of the TV Tuner (upwards of $80)? Any downtime with orb or synchronizing with the digital cable?

9) The internet doesn't seem "blazing fast" as I have seen advertised on the website. Is that because I don't have Opera yet?

10) Is there any way to add contacts to the phone off of ActiveSync?

11) I will be purchasing an extended battery w/ cover, a metal carrying case designed for extended battery, screen protector, 2gb card and an extra stylus. Am I missing any essential accessories?

I think that's everything, boy that is a lot of stuff but hopefully someone here will be kind enough to guide with their experiences and knowledge. Thanks for reading!

I WOULD NOT BOTHER WITH A BACKUP (SOME MAY DISAGREE). I HAVE PPC SINCE OCT/NOV2005…AND I HAVE WORKED ON THIS BABY SINCE DAY 1 (WELL, MAYBE 5 DAYS INTO IT)…NEVER A PROBLEM WITH BECOMING A BRICK HACKING. IF THAT DOES HAPPEN, HEY JUST RELOAD THE ROM (ORIGINAL OR NEW). A STICKY ON ROM UPDATE EXISTS.

2) The hacks I am most interested in are the MMS, both Cache hacks, disable sent tct msg notifcation pop-up, the annoying keyboard pop-up, Internet always on the Camera FPS hack and other various registry changes. MAYBE ONE TO CHANGE DEFAULT TIME WHEN KEYBOARD LIGHT AND/OR DISPLAY BACKLIGHT GOES OFF. HOW ABOUT DISABLING THE FLIGHT-MODE-ON BY DOUBLE CLICKING THE POWER BUTTON?

3) Third, I understand that Opera Internet Browser is the way to go. Where can I download this at? Didn't see any links for it during my research. Should I combine this specific program with anything else to maximize optimal performance?
I TRIED MINI OPERA THE OTHER DAY…AND IT WAS UNINSTALLED WITHIN 5 MINUTES. DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS OF THIS APP THAT HOGS UP 6 MB OF SPACE (I ONLY HAVE 10 MB FREE RAM LEFT AS IS). IT STILL DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO LOG ONTO AND FULLY USE SPRINT.COM AND CITIBANK.COM.

HTTP:/MINI.OPERA.COM BRINGS U TO http://www.opera.com/products/mobile...mini/campaign/

4) Do I need a program to ACTUALLY CLOSE PROGRAMS (NOT MINIMIZE) when I press "OK" or "X", or is there a registry hack? This was one of the issues I was confused with. HANDYSWITCHER OR BE CHEAP AND USE THE BUILTIN SETTINGS APP

5) Are the pay programs that include all of the registry hacks + other features worth the money and avoiding the hassle? NOT SURE, PROBABLY.

6) What programs should I store on my memory card, and what programs are essential to keep stored into the phones memory? NO COMMENT

7) HOW DO I GET SMALL FILESIZED RINGTONES? I saw a post of someone saying they use .wma ringtones in a certain instance, changing the mhz or something. I TIVO AND WATCH LIVE TV. I CAN EVEN PULLUP PICS FROM MY PC.

9) The internet doesn't seem "blazing fast" as I have seen advertised on the website. Is that because I don't have Opera yet? NOPE, NOT BLAZING FAST. EXPECT 400-900mbps AND AS A MODEM AVERAGE 100-200mbps DURING REGULAR BUSINESS DAY IN A WELL POPULATED AREA, LIKE DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO.

10) Is there any way to add contacts to the phone off of ActiveSync? ??? NOT SURE WHAT YOUR QUESTION IS.

11) I will be purchasing an extended battery w/ cover, a metal carrying case designed for extended battery, screen protector, 2gb card and an extra stylus. Am I missing any essential accessories?STAY AWAY FROM METAL CASE…AFFECTS RECEPTION (EVEN WITH EXTERNAL ANTENNA). I PROVED IT WITH MY TREO650 AND THE INNOPOCKET’S ALUMINIUM CASE WHEN I WENT CAMPING LAST YEAR FOR A WEEK IN A VERY CONTROLLED ‘TEST’ ENVIRONMENT.

BT HEADSET COMES IN HANDY

Yeah, but actually most all his questions are still answered in the threads.

Thats a nice list you got there, most of your questions have already been answered. But im bored so ill answer a few till my train comes.IM currently using NetFront 3.3 as my browser.I have tried opera but prefer Netfront. Its really a matter of opinion and what sites you use mostly. Some browsers work better than others for certain sites.Hey by the way is it just me or does Netfront not work with ORB?As far as internet speeds this phone is dam fast, but it depends on where you live too.The coverage in your area make not be spectacular.Just get a program that will close and minimize for you there a ton of freewares that do this.Train is here goodluck

thanks for the replies so far, it is greatly appreciated.

- I was asking if theres a way to add contacts through your COMPUTER when its ActiveSync'ed to your PPC. I think it'd be much faster that way. I know there's a pay program, but I'd like to avoid the extra prices if possible.

- I forgot to mention the keyboard light time, that's another thing I wanted to add.

- So the Aluminum Cases aren't worth it? I want something that will protect all aspects of my PPC from getting scratched or damaged. The last case I had for my nextel i870 didn't cover the whole phone.

- If anyone can help or put me in the right direction for the small filesize ringtones, how to close programs and not minimize them and what to store on the phone as opposed to your memory card, that would be awesome.

OUTLOOK, COMES WITH CD, RIGHT (I FORGET) ?

- So the Aluminum Cases aren't worth it? I want something that will protect all aspects of my PPC from getting scratched or damaged. The last case I had for my nextel i870 didn't cover the whole phone. IMO NO, EVEN THOUGH ONE SAVED MY TREO FROM A FALL ONTO THE PAVE MENT AT THE AIRPORT. THE NEGATIVE AFFECT ON SIGNAL STRENGTH IS NOT WORTH TO ME AS I AM GENERALLY CAREFUL W/ MY DEVICES.

- If anyone can help or put me in the right direction for the small filesize ringtones, how to close programs and not minimize them and what to store on the phone as opposed to your memory card, that would be awesome. HANDYSWITCHER FOR A PROGRAM TO CLOSE APPS

once again, welcome to the site amigo.

also,, as once stated, all of your questions have been asked and heavily discussed in this forum and even in a couple of other PPC forums on this site. feel free to search in the other PPC forums as a lot of information applies to the PPC platform, not just phone specific.

some of the answers you are looking for in your questions are personal so you will get some answers of varying degrees. again, search for the information and make your own judgement (i.e. whats trhebest case, ringtones, etc...)

also, kindly do not post multiple questions in one post. this helps make the search function less efficient. its OK to make up different threads on questions THAT HAVE NOT BEEN DISCUSSED thus far.

no one is picking on you and none of this is meant to be taken personal. we have thousands of active members and even more active threads and we are trying to keep things working smoothly.

thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Hello jbg772. The first thing you should read if you haven't already is the sticky forum posting rules which details how to efficiently find information (thread title only searches). This is really a must read for someone new to the forum. Here are some tips to get you started.

1. you need a backup program such as SPB Backup or Sunnysoft. do a thread title only search for "backup" without the quotes

2. No real essential hack, they are all optional and your 6700 will work fine without them

3. That's all really personal preference. Simply google opera internet browser and I am sure you will find a link in no time.

4. Yes, you will need some sort of 3rd party program to actually close a program. Pressing the ok/x simply minimizes.

5. It all depends if you want to spend the time to learn the hacks yourself. If not, the pay programs may be worth it to you.

6. Obviously depends on what programs you have installed. General rule of thumb is any program that has a today screen plugin, do NOT install it to the storage card. Any program that you want quick or constant access to, you should install those to the device's memory also, not the storage card.

7. you can simply use mp3s as ringtones. a simple search for mp3 encoder on download.com will pullup a ton of freeware programs that will let you convert between mp3, wav, and wma. Once you have the file in a wav format, you can use XP's Sound Recorder program to edit it then re-encode it into a mp3.

8. Orb is buggy at best for watching tv. Get yourself a Slingbox ($150-$200) at slingmedia.com and buy the Sling Mobile Player from the same site ($30) and you will be good to go.

9. Its not your browser. Just imagine trying to browse the internet on a 400mhz PC with only 64mb RAM, wouldn't be that fast would it? That's essentiallly what the 6700 is so you need to keep that in mind. The connection speed is there, hardware just isn't fast enough to keep up with it.

10. Activesync is a program for interfacing your 6700 with Outlook on your PC (among other things). If you want to add contacts, simply enter them in Outlook on your PC and they will automatically be transferred over to the 6700 (via Activesync) next time you sync.

11. get the $7 Blackberry car charger from Walmart
