I am wondering if anyone can answer this question:
The battery cover on my PPC-6700 has been loose for some weeks, and I've been vowing to take it in to get a new cover. While on a
business trip last week, I began to experience a problem I've seen posted here before - the speaker and microphone on my handset failed simultaneously, making the phone useless unless I used my wired headset.
No amount of soft or hard resets fixed the problem, and when I returned home 3+ hours of phone time with Sprint PCS tech support eventually got me directed to take my phone into my local Sprint PCS store for replacement. In the interim, my back cover fell off and I can't find it.
I went to the Sprint store this afternoon and discovered that the store closed on May 22, 2006 and would not be reopened (I am in Charlottesville, VA). Another call to Tech Support revealed that:
a) There was no record of my previous call
b) No replacement phone would be issued to me via Sprint PCS unless I made a Lockline claim, as Sprint considers this to be a known issue that the manufacturer must deal with under warranty
c) Unless I wanted to deal with loooong hold times and escalating tech support levels again, I wouldn't be getting any documentation of the problem from Sprint PCS.
I need to travel to NYC on Wednesday and plan to take my phone into a retail store for diagnostic testing, which I hope will reveal that my phone is broken. If they refuse, I suppose I'll contact the manufacturer and hope for the best.
In either case, do you think that the lack of the back cover will prevent me from getting a new phone? I'm thinking a tech may see the cover gone, assume that I've dropped the phone (I never have), and that the speaker problem was a result.
Also, if anyone can comment on their warranty experiences dealing directly with UTStarCom, I'd be glad to hear of them. I expect to be without a phone for some time, which is inconvenient given my frequent travel schedule, and I may need to invest in a secondhand handset to use while this is being addressed.
Thanks in advance for any help this community can offer.
