I had the same issue and called UTStarcoma nd they told me it had to be a USB connection to update. I made sure I had ALL my data backedup (programs require a re-install aafter update anyway) then I did a hard reset before attempting the update. After a hard reset my xv6700(without any of my programs re-installed) would sync via USB no problem so it allowed me to do the update without a hitch.
Once I had all my programs restored and back to normal I cannot sync via USB anymore so it has to be related to a program I have installed, but at least I got the update completed. Now I sync via BT and I love it.

I had similar USB hanging problem with ActiveSync 4.1 but after upgrading to the ActiveSync 4.2 Beta the problem has resolved. Check M$ website to get the v4.2 beta.

How to upgrade to the new ROM without losing your installed programs!

Just did the ROM upgrade recently, thought I would post my success story with Sprite Backup's Device Upgrade Mode. Yes, it did work, and I had my whole system configured and reinstalled on top of the new stuff in minutes after sucessfully flashing the new rom! Files, contacts, and all programs are there.

NOTE: I had problems with transferring email accounts over from Outlook from the old rom. I recommend excluding email from your backup process. If not, you will end up with the old email accounts appearing on your today screen, but they will be inaccessible and undeletable! Further, you will not be able to create a new account and use the original name--it is taken by the old account! However, if you make a mistake and backup the email with everything else, you can always perform another backup after the upgrade/restore, excluding the email this time, hard reset, and do a straight restore from that backup (no Device Upgrade Mode as described below). Now on with the upgrade.

First, get the latest version of Sprite Backup, as you will need it for WM5.0. I am using Sprite Backup Personal Edition, v5.1.0, Build 1417. It is a program worth having.

Next, go here --> https://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/a...k=search.aspx?
This is where you can get the elusive "GetUpgradeData2005.exe" tool that should have shipped with Sprite, (it's even referenced in the manual) but they would rather have you search their support site for it. Important thing is, there are various versions of this floating around, some of which date back to PPC2002. The one on this page is the one that will work with Windows Mobile 5. This is absolutely crucial.

Copy the GetUpgradeData2005.exe file to your storage card if available, you will need to run it locally on your device after a hard reset.

The following is from the manual, with some important corrections:

Run Sprite Backup from your PPC and create a backup on the device prior to the ROM upgrade. Copy this backup file to an external location, preferably a storage card. You will not need to back up the storage card itself, which will save some time and space.

Hard reset your device before doing the ROM upgrade. Run the GetUpgradeData.exe on the PPC (if it's on the storage card, you can run it right from there.)

You will get a message that UpgradeData.sbu has been created (it should be in My Device the root directory of your PPC, if not do a search to find it). Copy this UpgradeData file to your Storage Card or to your PC.

Run the ROM Upgrade. (if you get a brick, just remember to try a different USB port or PC, and NEVER use a hub or port replicator. Seach the forum for info on starting in "bootloader" mode.)

After a successful upgrade, install the latest version of Sprite Backup from your PC. If you are asked, do a Repair installation, reinstalling all files. You may have to wait for ActiveSync to connect and finish it's business before installing.

Start Sprite Backup on your PPC, go to Options and switch to Advanced Mode. In Advanced mode tap Options -> Restore Options.

At the Restore options screen, tap on the Device Upgrade Mode check box (it should now be checked). Tap on the OK button.

Use [...] to locate and select the Backup file created in step 1.

Go to the Restore tab, then tap Restore to initiate the Restore process and a dialog box will request the Data Upgrade file.
Tap [...] and source the UpgradeData.sbu file from step 3 and tap OK. (You will need to copy this file to your PPC somewhere if it's not there already.)

When the Upgrade File is selected tap OK to continue with the restore operation.

When the restore is done, the PPC should automatically soft reset. When the Today screen comes back up, it will likely request authorization to run many of the newly restored programs and their support programs. This will also happen when you first use any of the other restored programs.

You now have restored all your previous programs and settings (registry settings may still need to be manually updated--not sure but seems like the phone ring lag is back on mine after the upgrade.)

Also, I allowed the Verizon customizations after the first hard reset, and after the ROM upgrade. Not saying you need to do the same, but that's what I did, and my upgrade worked. Whether you choose to allow the customizations or not, you should probably do the same thing both times.

That's it! Worked for me first time. If it doesn't work for you, don't blame me--you can always do another hard reset...

Unhappy My 6700 has turned into a brick

I wanted to take advantage of the new rom update. I never was able to get any of my computers to recognize the device via USB consistently, so I have been using bluetooth, which works great for syncing. I tried to bluetooth the rom update and it kept giving me the connection 101 error. I tried 2 other computers and it kept giving me the device unrecognized message. I call the sorry sprint support and of course they gave me the usual of going to the local store to get them to push the update on the phone. I knew what was going to be next, but i had to comply anyway. They looked at me like I was Hezbollah when I told them what my problem was in the store. Then they said to send back to the manufacturer. After talking to several managers and telling them to just cancel my service, they decided to send me a new phone which I have not received yet. I am upset the update did not work for me, but what can u do. I love the phone and what it can do, but the activesync and connecting to my pc's has been a horrible process

I had the same problem, but after doing a hard reset and before installing any 3rd party programs I was able to activesync USB without a problem. The update requires you to make a hard reset prior to installing the update. If your unit reacts like mine this should allow you to Sync via USB to install the update.
After installing the update and re-installing all of my programs I can no longer sync USB and have reverted back to syncing BT.

I concur. There's a program I installed that changed something in the way ActiveSync communicates with the XV6700. Oh well....

I'm having a problem asked earlier but not responded to. For some reason after my update the MMS messenger isn't showing up at all on my phone. I can hold on a pic and it gives me the option to "send as a pic" yet nothing happens when i click on the link. All of the other mail/messeges appear to be working fine though.

Silly question

I'm sure this is a silly question, but the link to UT Starcom's website for the download of the ROM update only has an update for the SPRINT 6700, not the Verizon version, am I missing something?

I was able to install the old cab (VC_over_BT(btt).cab) that was written to allow Microsoft Voice to be used with BT headsets. It still works with the new update. Don't know if VC is any better than voice speed dial for you, but it is something.

I did the update a few days ago. When finished and put phone back cradle the "Setup Pocket PC Sync wizard" ran and I X'd it out ( Was not paying attention). The phone would not communicate. After a reboot of PC I ran the Sync Wizard again. Found the phone and USB has been working fine ever since.

Rom Update, Not Ready For Prime Time..........

I updated my xv6700 and was looking foward to the newest features. I was especially looking forward to the push email. Unfortunatley it was not all its cracked up to be. Push email does not work as well as advertised. At least for me. I watched the exchange gurus video and even sent it to my IT director. After he watched it we confirmed that all setting were exacty the way the should have been. But still, emails did not come through unless I was sitting at my desk with my computer turned on and logged onto the network. This pretty much made the feature not only meaningless, but a hinderence. So, what to do? Well I decided to do a hard reset and low and behold..........you cant remove the update. Verizon was kind enough to exchange out my 6700 for a new (old) model and I am happy to say all is well.

I just wanted to let you all know this update has its disadvantages. Other than the "push" feature I didnt really see any other benifits to installing it. Yes, browsing web pages was faster with a "page down" feature and the nice "Windows Mobile" banner at reset was nice as well. But, besides that, I dont see the point. Especially when the SMS "pull" email works as well as any push method ever could.

Voice training

Quote:
Ditto on both of those for me. My wife's Moto E815 has really nice voice software out of the box. My guess is that UTS has a deal with M$ so that people have to buy MSVC if they want this feature.
I realy don't understand this. I haven't had to train mine, just add voice tags. That seems like what I've had to do in the past for voice dialing.

Calendar alerts and BT

Occasionally I get a reminder for a scheduled appointment but do not see the pop-up or dismiss button.

Also I still loose BT from time to time. I have to go into the connections menu and turn it on. Seems to happen less often than before.

It has been several weeks and no other problems. I am much more happy with the phone now. Never did like the worthless audio alerts for reminders and the small screen size, but nothing is perfect.
