Thanks GeekyGuy.
I never tried to stop the install of Verizon customization software. Neither did I hack the reg.

honglet, did you run the Verizon customization apps after the update, or did you do the soft reset before the Verizon customization programs ran?
EDIT: If I remember correctly, I had that error BEFORE I ran the Verizon customization apps. Seems like I tried to do the *228 updates first and got that error message

I would suspect one of the Verizon apps failed more than I would SPB Pocket Plus.

Save your Transcriber settings!

In ten pages of posts, no one thought to mention this tip yet? If you use Transcriber, be sure to save your settings before you upgrade the ROM. Open Transcriber, tap the Letter Shapes button, and then save your settings to be reloaded after the upgrade. I did not do this, so I have another long, boring sesson of handwriting analysis coming up. I hope this reminder saves someone else the trouble.

Anyone had issues with their BT headsets loosing pairing with the upgraded ROM? Mine seems flaker than usual after the upgrade.

Thanks,

My Experience with the Upgrade

Running the upgrade had an issue. The phone lost connection with the PC in the middle of the upgrade and it seemed to die. I had to call UTStarcom for assistance. Seems running the upgrade again worked but who would know this with a seemingly dead phone. After completing the upgrade further issues cropped up. First the Comm Manager will not stop running even though I hit the Exit button when on the app. When I try to quit it using the Memory manager I get an error and have to say to quit the application. This never happened prior to the upgrade. Next I lost the Audio Gateway due to the Voice dialing. Thanks to thisguyinoc for providing the hack to toggle between the gateway and the dialing. Last issue so far is ActiveSync on the phone starts when I connect to my Garmin GPS 10 through bluetooth and I can't figure out how to stop it. This also didn't happen prior to the upgrade. The biggest kicker is I contacted UTStarcom asking about these issues. The answer was unbelievable. I asked first about the Comm Manager, then about the ActiveSync, then about the Audio Gateway. The answer about the Comm Manager was an inquiry as to whether I had run the upgrade even though the first thing I had said in my question was that I had run it. The next answer about the ActiveSync was that they did not support third party devices despite the fact ActiveSync is running on the phone. They didn't even address the issue about the Audio Gateway. When Audiovox supported the phones it wasn't the greatest but at least they tried, but it sure seems that UTStarcom doesn't even care. I guess enough of that. If anyone has answers for the Comm Manager and ActiveSync I'd sure appreciate your input. Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Best practice for VX upgrade

Hi there,

Just wondering the best way to upgrade quickly and painlessly with keeping all my hacks and programs intact?

Well, forget the upgrade option in Sprite back-up. It failed for me and several other people.

I don't know if SPB backup will operate a safe backup following the ROM upgrade as I'm new to this package. (Reference paragraph #1.)

In short, I know of no way to do this. The registry is overwritten by the new ROM and short of the methodology the Sprite people had that doesn't work, it's not safe to load a pre-upgrade backup as it will restore the older registry.

I'm open to any suggestions others may offer. I just bit the bullet and re-installed.

HTH

Error code 9

After the upgrade I get a error message code 9 when It tries to sync while in the charger in the morning. It makes my data connection disconnect, I know this because the "EV" has a white box around it. To fix the problem I go to three or four web pages to force it to stay connected and then it stays connected for the rest of the day. This happens every morning; and sometimes it disconnects when I make a long phone call.

Read the go to the first page and read the list of fixes. If none have any value to you, then just keep your current ROM. For me, I found the new ROM to be a good step up on the original, especially since I use the push email feature.

Definitely. AS should preserve your contacts and calendar. Unfortunately, you will get to be intimately familiar with re-installing your software again. Good luck,

This also happened to me. The screen did say something to the effect of 'USB DRIVER 1.00'. I disconnected everything, re hoocked it up, crossed my fingers and went again. 2nd time worked liked a charm.

20 minutes to update the ROM and 10 minutes to run the Verizon script - that was more time than I was pre paired for.

I stalked this phone a while on Microsoft.com I was jealous when Sprint users got it first. I was an early adopter with Verizon (with the old ROM). I have only had the new version for a couple of days, but it seems to address most of the things I hated with the phone.

What I despise about the upgrade...

First of all, yes, I said despise... Secondly, keep in mind that the process of actually installing the update went off without a hitch.

1. Unable to partner my Discovery 640, which is great. I love having a useless $130 BT headset. Hopefully I'll find some trick to making it work.

2. Unable to talk while plugged into car charger. I always have my phone on the charger when on the road, but unless I unplug it prior to answering or making a call, I get this great high pitch squeel coupled with the craziest tin can experience I've ever heard. This never happened prior to the update.

3. Comm Manager - Although it looks nice, it likes to randomly disable my data connection. As someone who practically lives in his car from 8-6 every day, it doesn't help not being able to sync with my Exchange server without going in and restarting the data connection. This is a weird problem and has only happened twice.

4. Double issue: Pin request vs. Device lock. Can someone please tell me what in the world the difference is between setting up a pin requirement or locking the device? Seems pretty stupid to me. Also, I absolutely despise the fact that after the update you now are required to enter the pin even when charging(cradle or car). It never used to request a pin when on external power, and I seriously wish it didn't now.

I don't really despise the next two:

4. Not having EV-DO in my market yet (ETA Aug/Sep '06). I can't effectively use push without missing a whole lotta calls.

5. Voice dialing is worthless. Are you kidding me? The old school Sammy flip phone(circa 1999) had voice dialing which didn't require training. You mean to tell me UT Starcom couldn't acquire this technology in 2006? Fortunately I have MSVC so no big deal.

Anyone else unable to pick up an incoming call on your BT headset with the handset on vibrate? I have had this happen twice today. The call can be answered via the green handset button thru the handset and internal speaker and mike. Just not via the headset over the BT link.

Thanks, Bob Duckworth

I ran a test to check it out, set my phone to vibrate and then called my phone from a landline and I could answer the phone from bluetooth without a hitch. My problem is my phone doesn't vibrate. Dang wonder when that quit?

Well I did a hard reset and now vibrate is working. (Thank heaven for sprite backup) I tried another test and set phone to vibrate and still had no problems answering with BT button on headset.

Don't knoqw where my earlier reply went, but thanks for your reply. Glad you got vibrate back. My BT has gotten flaky since the update. Maybe I can find another stack to try.

Thanks,

Bob Duckworth

I need a bit of advice..

I am ready to do the update, but i have one hold-up. I have always connected/sync'd to my laptop with bluetooth. Now I cannot get activesync to connect to the phone via usb (it just enters an endless "connecting" cycle). Bluetooth stillworks great for all connectivity.

Now my question.. Should I consider the possibility of attempting to do the update via BT? I'd almost venture to guess that it wouldnt work at all, especially since the upgrade includes modification to the BT stack.

Any advice would be appreciated!!

I need a drink!

Someone else had a similar issue. I'm assuming based on point 5 that you've done the MSVC initiated by BT hack. For some reason that messed up his BT connection as well. Using the Tweaks2k2 program to make the hack fixed his issue. Just on point of comparison I have had no pairing problems with my Plantronics 510.

I've not heard of anyone else having this issue. I'm not totally sure it's due to a ROM update thing. I'd call CS on this one if you've already tried Hard Resetting to fix the problem.

I never use the data connection (it just ain't worth it when you're not in EVDO, at least for me) so I can't comment on this happening with me. Maybe it disconnects when you lose service?

I thought both of these were relatively useless features when you could lock all buttons but the power button since before the ROM upgrade (this is still all that I do)

Ditto on both of those for me. My wife's Moto E815 has really nice voice software out of the box. My guess is that UTS has a deal with M$ so that people have to buy MSVC if they want this feature.

In general I'd say that a lot of your experiences seem to be rather unusual and rare. I personally haven't experienced any of your issues.

I think this (trying to do the update over BT) is a really really bad idea. I think it absolutely requires a USB connection anyway.

Why not, since the device hard resets anyway during the upgrade, do a hard reset first, clear out your AS settings on your computer so it can work via USB, then do the upgrade?

To get Activesynch to connect over USB, start Activesync on the 6700. Go to menu | connections. Under the When Cradled heading (probably the only one on the page) make sure the check box "synchronize all PC's using this connection" is checked, and the drop-down shows 'USB.

My guess based on your symptom is that this is not checked.
