do you use the Kokko's or eten dialer replacement? I've heard that it may cause an issue with this, though I use eten and have no problems...

I used to have this problem where the ## codes wouldn't work and I had the eten dialer. I still use the eten dialer, but I dont have problems anymore. Try installing the customize cab in the extended rom to reinstall those ## codes. To do this, use a third party file browser like total commander and type "/extended_rom/" in the location field. Double tap on the spcs customize cab.

38, 34, 18 what?

If you mean dB then that is good, lower the better.

It can't make your reception worse!

It's a PRL: Prefered Roaming List (source)

Quote:
A PRL, or Preferred Roaming List, upgrade will allow your phone to locate roaming partners when you are out of coverage, as well as find Sprint PCS signal faster. A PRL upgrade can be delivered in two ways, either “over the air”, by dialing *2, or in a Sprint Store, where a tech can use a data cable to manually send you the PRL. A software upgrade (also known as a firmware upgrade) is an upgrade of the software that runs the phone itself (makes it display graphics, the interface, ect.) The firmware can only be upgraded at the Sprint Store. Software updates are usually released to fix bugs/glitches in the phone. PRL updates should be performed every 3-4 months and there is no charge for either update.

**Note** A PRL update WILL NOT improve SPCS coverage. It will only help the phone acquire a signal faster. This means that if you have poor reception at home, you will not get better reception with an update. When SPCS adds more towers, you DO NOT need a PRL update to pick up those towers.
However, for EvDO PRLs, they are slightly different as they contain HDR channels which may (I stress MAY) improve your EvDO performance, hence why we all do it (plus the possiblity of the Alltel Data roaming that's coming)

If you are now having issues, it's probably a temporary tower issue but certainly not the PRL (unless to you using Roaming at home?)

I did back up my Phone with Sprite before i did it..

I don't know what you think may be going on, but there is no such thing as a "normal" PRL. They change at least every couple of months as Sprint makes new roaming agreements and as their roaming partners change. Restoring your pda from the backup won't make any difference with the PRL - it's internal to the phone (the backup really only affects the pda). - sheureka

If you want to go back to the prl you had before, it is the same exact procedure. You do not need to go back to an old backup or anything like that. Just use ##775# and choose the prl you wish to keep. Really though, going backwards wont help you.

Yes, the PRL will even survive a phone-level hard reset. How, I ain't got a clue one. But it does.

Smile thank you guys :)

After much hassles with Sprint trying to download the new prl ( and prl 21 too) including taking it to their customer service center here in Palm Springs, CA, I decided to try to install myself. IT took me less than 8 minutes to upload file to phone, call CSR to get my msl# and to install new prl on phone. Sure beats having prl 17. I guess the old adage : if you want it done right, do it yourself" really applies to SprintPCS. lol.

Again, thank you for easy step by step instructions. Was a pice of cake to install.

Nope, do not think so. The bad SIDs have been in a few of the past PRL's I had a source check for me. They are coded correctly in the PRL as NO GOOD (do NOT roam). The bad firmware in the ROM needs to be changed before this stuck in roaming is fixed. I believe PRL should contain/list all SIDs for a given geo area so that when the phone sees a signal with that SID, it knows whether to latch on and use it or not.

Took my PPC to three local stores for PRL update - they won't touch it with a ten-foot pole. All claims it is against Company (security) policy to hook up PDA to Company system via Activesync.

MrSprint, thanks for the files man - otherwise we all be stuck at PRL 20216

They responded within an hour and I have updated the PRL.
slot Cycle has NOTHING to do with frequent updates... so maybe the moral of the story is tell or email sprint, say you want to ...........(fill in the .... with something really technical and complex as sh!t-sounding) .... and you need your MSL code to accomplish this by getting into the programming mode.

Wholla. They will give you the MSL just to not sound stupid to a customer (hey, a customer should not know more than a rep, right?) and to get you off the phone.

So does this only affect roaming, or will it improve EVDO coverage as well?

WOW! Thanks so much for posting the new PRL. This way is so much easier than the old *2 junk that never worked. I called Sprint and used the "I need my MSL so I can reprogram my phone", he verified my account and gave it to me. So simiple I was amazed. Took 2 minutes total!
