VERIZON Extended ROM: which cabs are junkware; install to ExtROM??

If you have Sprint, PLEASE don't respond! I've read every thread on this forum about Extended ROM and every time someone with Verizon asks about Verizon Extended ROM, 50 Sprint users reply and hijack the discussion, and no one ever answers the Verizon guy's questions.

1. Are there any files in the VERIZON Extended ROM that would be considered "junkware" and can be removed?

2. Has anyone had success installing any programs to the leftover space in their VERIZON Extended ROM or using the space for file storage?

3. I've considered (for fun) putting a new splash screen bmp in there and adjusting the config.txt file accordingly. Has anyone done this?

I can only answer question #2. I have installed 4 programs in this area without a problem, Dictionary editor, Navizon, Sbp Backup and VirtualEarth. I also have my photocontacts pix stored there. No problems whatsoever.

you should be able to change the splash screen, but to get it to work you have to change the config file and then do a hard reset... that's the sucky part

For my last hard reset I only let these cabs run (I edited the config.txt file):

Enable_RingTone.sa.CAB
Link.sa.CAB
Region.sa.CAB
Signed_MMS3.0.6.22_Apache_VZW_26Sep05.CAB (this is for MMS)

The rest were branding and config items. You get a couple of more options in some areas and you don't have make some of the registry changes (EVDO and Call, etc). I haven't had any problems with just those 4. I can still do the fancy provisioning stuff (packet times, or something like that I can't remember the name).

Hope that helps. I have the XV6700.

The long one is the MMS program.
The Link one sets up the PIE link on button 4, I think.
I can't remember what the other 2 programs do. If you search this forum for "Tweaks/Hacks" you should get a post that contains a word document with a compiled list of hacks. In that document is a description for verizon phones and a link to a post that details that info. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

You can find what each file in the Extended ROM does here:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showt...d+rom+registry

While the registry hacks I've seen listed on this site are good for VIEWING the Extended ROM ... I didn't see ones to UNLOCK the ROM so that you can read and write to it. I found an app to do that on this link:

I have most of my apps in the EXT_ROM and installed the Verizon Apps in Main Memory.

No problems at all.

Has anyone been able to determine which of the cabs in the extended Rom (for the most recent update) are junk and can be removed?

I did a hard reset and unlocked the extended ROM today, and am amazed at how well my 6700's running - now that I've properly installed everything. But if I can get even 500 K more out of the extended ROM - it'll help me out a lot. I decided to throw MorphGear and some of it's modules in the 4.5 megs of leftover space - but I'm missing one module, and I'm just short of space.

I've seen the listings of the new extended ROM - but I'm still unsure what I can do without. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if Verizon included ANY junkware in the latest ROM? I've searched a variety of forums - and I see all the listings, but no one's stated that anything can definitively be removed.
