Most curious! I can't get the link to take me anywhere but to a "This page cannot be found" page. I'm not surprised that Qwest doesn't know anything about it. But I'll call on Monday and see if I get the same answer.

Thanks for the Heads Up. Let us know if you can get a functional download. Meanwhile, I'll keep checking the link from time to time to see if anything changes at UTStar.

I just went to this page:
http://www.utstarcom.com/pcd/Downloads.aspx

All the upgrades to all the carrier's phones are here but the links for Qwest don't work. (The other links DID work.) I opened an account and/or joined their forum and asked via customer-support email what the story was. When I get an answer, I'll report back.

Question No news is not necessarily good news.

Qwest doesn't know anything about any of this yet.

But UTStarcom does. My threads there are attached below. Bottom line: There IS an upgrade available and a pdf file that tells you how to install it. But you can't get to either of those files right now. "The web is down" says the UTStarcom guy.

Funny thing is, their website works just fine -- until you get to the link for the two files we want. All I can say is Keep Trying!!!

Stephen

Stephen,

Try going to www.utstar.com.....then click on products....handset......pocketpc......then data devices...Select your phone sort by carrier.....then under download you can find the appl and the doc......At this time the web page is down so keep checking. This is the only way to get the updates or your carrier web sites.

Thank you for contacting UTStarcom...
Customer (Stephen) 06/05/2006 03:33 PM
Hello Robert,

Thanks for your reply.
Am I missing something here? When I clicked on the link you sent, I arrived at a sales page for my PPC-6700 and not an update page. Is there another link I can try to get to the new ROM update for my phone?

Thanks.

Stephen

PS I already responded to your email so this message may be redundant. I don't know which protocol works best for you.
Response (Robert M.) 06/05/2006 09:01 AM
Stephen,

Here is the link for the software update for your device.

http://www.utstar.com/pcd/view_phone...&bID=30&sAct=0

You need to download a third party software for your pdf file, you need adobe 2.0 for pocket Pc . This software is not support by us.

Thank you for contacting UTStarcom...

Hello,

I have been unsuccessfully trying to get your link to the upgrade for my Qwest PPC-6700 Apache handset to open so that I can download the update and the pdf file. Neither seems to work. Can you tell me when these files will be available?

Thank you,
Stephen

I just clicked the link above, selected Qwest as the carrier, and from Downloads chose Application and the download started. Now I am on Sprint, so I don't need it, but I thought I'd let all you Qwestites know that it seems to be working now.

Yes, it DOES work. I have the upgrade and the instruction file too.

It seems to be the same as the Sprint update with the following features according to the document:
• Microsoft Messaging and Security Feature Pack- The Messaging & Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 enables business users to easily stay connected to their email while on the go and helps businesses to better protect device data. Benefits of this feature pack include:
• Direct Push Technology- Keep your Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Inbox up-to-date using Direct Push Technology. Plus, you can now browse your corporate address book over-the-air with Exchange 2003 SP2. Faster transfer and synchronization of data- Outlook data sent between Exchange Server and a Windows Mobile-based device is significantly compressed, enabling faster transfer and synchronization of data.
• Better protection of device data and management of devices
o Remotely enforced IT policy
o Local and remote device wipe
o Certificate-based authentication
• Enhanced security using Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME)
• Added a Voice Dialing application to allow you to leverage the handsfree capability already on the device.
• Main Today Screen provides you the capability to lock the device and prevent inadvertently activity.
• Corrected an issue where unknowingly, to the user, the device would enter into "Flight Mode"

I don't want to be first on my block to install it though!!! Did you try to run it yet, pwernerjr?

And thanks BTW, Waitin, for the good news.
Guess I'll have to start reading the 1800-page Sprint Update thread...

It's funny since Qwest knows nothing about it a week ago. Still I'm very happy about the news. It's very good news for me. I will also have to learn how to install it. I am also concerned about battery drain with the new rom.
It would be nice to keep the tread active for us Qwest users. I will try to install on Thursday.

Yes, Qwest has EVDO.
No, no A2DP in this release..

Marty, can we retitle this thread for Qwest ROM update issues now that the download is no longer a problem? Or should we just start a new thread?

I work for qwest and the reason for the delay is they want to post the rom update on the www.qwest.com website which will be done no later than this week

Thanks, pwernerjr. The message and your answer about Windows Beta Live seem to have disappeared somehow. But I'm glad it still works in Pocket MSN.

One last question... Did you have any problems with incoming calls not interrupting an EVDO session -- where you had to run a fix with your MSN, MSID, and MDN numbers like some of the Sprint people had to do? I made a note of the procedure and I'm planning on calling Qwest for these numbers, just in case. Then, since it looks like a quiet weekend. I'll run a full backup and try the new ROM installation then.

Things I learned

Well, I finally did it!!!

The update was easy. Trying to restore my apps "the easy way" was a nightmare. SPB didn't work for me. It only got me up to the Windows menu after resetting and froze there. But Sprite worked perfectly and overlayed all my old programs and hacks over the new rom after a hard reset.

Some things I learned:

1. We have Rom Update 2.06. Sprite has 2.1. Verizon has 2.2. So we are way behind!!! I don't have any registry entries for the Hybrid/EVDO/1X choice and it is not available as far as I can tell. Also, the ext_rom cabs are completely different from the Verizon cabs and somewhat different from the Sprint cabs. The good thing is that there is still no junkware in ext_rom so nothing seems to need to be removed and there is space leftover for other programs, if I ever want to load anything there.

2. When you run bootloader, you can't see the "Serial" or any other cues because there is no backlight. You've gotta have a really good light source.

3. When you set up a hard reset and the option is to click on Y or N, you can't do either on the screen. I kept running Bootloader and reinstalling the update until I figured out that if I open the keyboard I can push the Y key and the reset begins!!!

4. Qwest won't give you the MSL number NO MATTER WHAT. I tried calling for reprogramming as suggested in another thread. When I said that I kept getting a "phone is not activated" message, they kept walking me through hard resets until I told them everything was OK again. When I said I needed to change my slot relay cycle, they didn't know what I was talking about (and neither did I). When I just asked for it outright, all the way up through third level supervisors, they kept saying no but finally gave me a one-time-only number which they didn't think would work.
Fortunately, I don't seem to have an EVDO/Incoming Call conflict. Everything works.

4. Qwest tech service still doesn't know anything about this ROM update!!!

5. The Voice Dialing/BT registry fix rocks!

6. Uncheck all Start Menu items before running a restore to previous version apps. Otherwise you get dupes and freeze-ups when you try to delete them.

7. After you restore from an old-rom backup and you tweak all the settings like Device Name and Start Menu items, RUN AUTO.EXE AGAIN from the ext_rom folder. This brings back all the new improved stuff that will otherwise get lost or diluted.

Basically, I'm happy with the added stability and speed in the new rom version. Both are actually obvious. I haven't figured out how to activate Push yet but that 7th button is sitting there like a small gray rock... waiting for me to check it out.

I've done more than enough for this week already!

If there had been a survey for Qwest, I would bave been one of the "Major Problems but got everying working" people, thanks to everyone who contributed to this Rom Update issue on this forum.
