Tutorial/Tweak: Changing the today screen font color

Hey everybody,

You guys here have shared so much, and though this is a really small tweak, I thought I'd share it, just because I couldn't find it anywhere else.

Backstory:
I chose a really nice grayscale sketch as my background, which is more white than black... meaning the today screen fonts didn't show up since they were white. I tried using WisBar 2 Advance to fix the problem, but it doesn't appear that it does what I was looking for. So, I did some digging in the registry, and came up with this:

Navigate with a registry editor to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Color\
Locate the key named "4"
Open the key and change the value to the color of fonts you want. The first 3 bytes of the key are standard Hex color format (RR GG BB); just leave the last byte as 00 (I'm assuming it's a transparency byte). So, to change it to blue, set the key to "00 00 FF 00"

Enjoy!

Cool. I don't suppose you know how to change the "selector" color e.g. when you hightlight an item, that background color? Mine is greyish and really hard to discern adn would like to change it to a Red. TIA

You mean the selection color of items on the today screen (ie when you click the messages, it highlights that "row" of sorts)?
Hm, that's a toughie. My "selection" color is blue, so I went through the same registry folder looking for a blue key with no avail. I'll take a closer look if I get a chance (heading out to the store at the moment). I'll post my results, if I have any success.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm talking about!

Any help there would be very welcomed.

I'm thinking it's tied into the "theme" somehow but I'm not sure how it's coded in.

Question Update?

I don't suppose anyone figured out the color scheme/reg key for the color the transparent/selector on the Today Screen (e.g. when you highlight an item, the background of that item)?

btw, here is a RGB/Hex program for choosing the right Hex color format.

Color Blender

This tweak works like a charm...the only problem is trying to decide what color!

Nice little tweak!

Dose any one know where the setting is for the dividing lines?

I too think the highlight is tied in to the theme, it may be some where in with the task bar. It would be nice to find this out. Getting a color that blends in with my background image while still highlighting would be sweet. My dark grey doesn't work well with the blue pic.

Oooo...

anyone try this program yet? TdyScheme Changer

TdyScheme Changer is a Pocket PC application to change the today scheme colors. It is also able to change the color of the taskbar and soft keys for Windows Mobile 5.0. It is also possible to remove the gradient effect of the bars and set the colors to black.

I'm going to give it a shot now...

Very, very cool program

Still haven't found the answer to my "selector" problem, but for budney YOU need this as you can choose any RGB for your divider lines on the Today screen.

I still haven't figured out all the settings and what they do (some are just for 2002/03) but it works flawlessly.

Here goes another hour of my time deciding what colors looks cooler...

here are some screen caps:

Well this little program is a beta, that is for sure. I couldn't get the notification bar to color right. The WM5 Colors works the first time, changed some things to grey/light grey. But will not change to another color afterwords.

I'm not even sure what the notification bar is...lol

anyways, yeah I can't get the WM5 colors to change to anything RGB. but that's kinda okay cause I just went with the "black bars" and really liked it. Plus it got rid of those horizontal bars.

leave feedback for the developer/let him know..he's wants input to further develop it.

I ment Navigation Tray, that is what Theme Generator calls it???

Well I am thinking that the WM5 button will help you with your highlight issue. I put a new today theme on my device which was blue, and once I started messing with the WM5 page the Navigation Tray, Highlights, and my the memory card meter bar went from blue to grey.

I will be leaving some feedback for the developer tomorrow.

You can make your own Today theme or modify an existing one. These is far more flexable than hacking the registry each time you change your Today image.

ThemeGenCE

Download the English version. The program text has been converted to English. (Put the mouse pointer over the buttons to see what they do.) Unfortunately the help file is still in French so you have to copy and paste into Bablefish a lot. Because of this it is easier to modify an existing Today theme (TSK file) rather than start from scratch. Use the option button to select the image size. Insert your image. Set your line and text colors etc. At the bottom of the WM5 screen there is a button for Keys+. This lets you set even more colors.

Then generate your new theme. The program will generate the theme (TSK file) on your PC which you can then copy to your 6700. Or it can generate the TSK file directly to the 6700 (I put them in the Windows directory).

SysColorChanger 0.1 Released

Getting a little closer here...

Just released: SysColor Changer 0.1

Works well as I was able to change my menu background color, text and highlight color.

To answer my own question: How to change the "perimter color" of selected items on your today screen, it turns out it's tied to your Base Hue.

I picked this up from ppc6700users.com (link)

More info can be found there on other changes.

Quote:
Following hacks are located in:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Color

Perimeter Color
go to BASE HUE

value data = put any number here. m9ne is set at 10 which is dark grey. found out 10000 is bright blue

then just save and watch the color change

BaseHue value are 0-255 for grayscale, 256-495 for a colors from a hue scale (e.g. red to yellow to green, etc)
Mines a green/blue color now which looks good and very easy to see on the Today screen when moving around.
