Most annoying 6700 problem you deal with?

I love my 6700 in general, but I am curious about others opinions on the single most annoying thing you have to deal with, whether it be a problem with WM5 in general or specific to this phone.

I will start:

The most common thing I do on my 6700 is text messaging. I read a message, hit reply, flip out the keyboard, and start typing. The annoying part is that while the screen is switching to landscape, some of the characters I type get lost in the void. For example, if I typed "hey there this is a test" while everything was rendering, I typically end up with something like "hy thee thiss a tes". Where is the input buffering?? I have my 6700 overclocked to 624mhz and I have applied all the speed related registry hacks (glyphcache, etc), but it still happens.

so....
MY MOST ANNOYING PROBLEM:
Having to wait for everything (text area, title bar... EVERYTHING) to finish rendering to landscape before I can start typing my text messages.

What is your most annoying problem?

My biggest annoyance is when using the stylus and I want to change from 'letter recognizer' to 'keyboard it takes at least 5 seconds to bring up the options flyout so that I can make the selection. Drives me nutz!

Most annoying:
The bluetooth disconnecting sometimes. I had a previous 6700 which was replaced by this refurb. Never had this problem before. I'm just too lazy to go back and have their tech look at it. But yea....going to sleep and knowing the bluetooth is connected then waking up and going to work trying to Voice command a call to find out the connection was lost is sometimes annoying. It also takes some time to reconnect the two.

Speed is my #1 grief, i.e. everything you mentioned above and more. When you try to launch a program, it sometimes takes 5 seconds. Same thing just opening contacts or any other action. Overclocking is not an option (as this board has discussed extensively, permanent overclicking drains the battery with little gain and adds instability), and all the cache hacks help a bit, but not enough.

Bluetooth sometimes disables itself for no good reason; the backlight sometimes goes off and stays off until you navigate to the backlight settings in the darkness and re-check the checkbox.

Some tools have been hacked in (Verizon's MMS tool is inconsistent with the standard messaging tool and requires stylus clicks where the standard tool could be operated with the joystick and keys). In fact, the entire phone isn't always good for one-handed operation.

And of course - DSOD, DSOD, DSOD.

This phone could use a huge speed and stability boost. I don't care so much about a cute gradient on the title bar as I'd like my phone to be responsive and reliable.

I don't get service in my office, so my phone settings timeout. When I go back to an area that I have coverage and try to make a call I sometimes get the unable to complete call as dialed and have to reboot my phone. I had to do this on my 6600, so I'm used to it. Kinda annoying though....

How about the notifications?

I don't know if this is only becaused I have DirectPush enabled from our Exchange server, but I get a ton of emails and am ALWAYS getting "You have X Unread Messages" Notifications.

The other Notification I hate is the VoiceMail notification you cannot get rid of until you listen to the message(s). Isn't the Enevelope icon at the top enough?

Where to start...

As a half-toteing Treo user (still cant make a full transition) there are lots of things mostly WM5 that annoy me. Here are just a few!

1. Overal touch screen button usability. Come on MS...get a clue... we're not aliens with fingers the size of human hairs ...nor should it be assumed we're going to pull out the stylus everytime we need to do something... If the guys at Palm can do it ..so can you..it's called HUMAN FACTOR engineering.

Solution: Don't engineer your mobile os interfaces like you do desktop interfaces... indulge a little.. make interface buttons larger (see Palm/Treo) offer interface shims on top of existing apps (i.e for PIE..do like treo did and make the Favorites be thumb size labeled buttons that are easy to access and touch to activate... don't hide favorites down in a tree view like on a desktop implementation)

2. Joystick 5-way.. ugh...try using this thing for more than 5 minutes straight...it barely has enough differential height abouve the buttons surrounding it that you have to us minute motiions of your thumb to get this thing to work... and repeated use is very straining.. I think it's already been proven (see treo again) that a 5 way where the thumb can rest in a "bed" and then "rock" to initiate control is the best engineered use case...

3. Buttons below Screen: Gee guys...this is a device we use...not a work of art... don't make buttons that are built into the smooth surface of the case ...that are virtually undetectable by blind touch... come on... again..look at raised button method (used on treo) as an example..much easer to find by touch alone and easier to activate as you're pushing a raised button down to the base surface of the phone..versus pushing a flush button into or sub surface of the phone...much harder to do...(btw I'm a guitar player so my dexterity level is very high..and i'm still complaining )

4. Don't statically assign buttons.. Not everyone will like your button assignments..and not everyone is a registery hacker either. So make a nice high level interface to reassign buttons to apps that individual users prefer... hell i never use voice memo button..half the time i forget it's there.....i can hack the registry..but just haven't had the time... would have been nicer to just go (like the TREO ...see a trend here ) and re-assign buttons as I wish...

5. Syncing....gee...did we go back to the 90's with Activsync...what's with not being able to sync anymore wirelessly.. oh i read the reason.. security concerns....@#$3 there are more prominent areas of security concern than this..and if it is a big deal to your corporate clients MS ..then make a version that doesn't do wireless for them...and one that does for the rest of us...gee... tethering the device or being in BT range is just a pain...

6. What's with not closing an app when we close it..what's with this... basic 101 in application manipulation.if a user clicks X to close an app..then by golly it should be closed...not parked in memory still cranking away...where's the usability expert that pushed things this direction...

7. Pop up menus....again... here what's with giving us these small pop up menus ....you have to either expertly manipulate your 5-way joy stick or tap with the extra long fingernails you must grow... why not (since the user is performing a sub function in the application) take over the majority of the screen with larger buttons one could touch screen with thumb or finger...

8. Also..these devices are messaging devices..they are intended to take the place of those old pagers and utilize the new advanced technologies like SMS..etc.. why do i have to get all my messages via pop-up bubbles...and why do my notifications not get save or queued anywhere...reset your phone and you miss all your notifications..agh!!.. put those in a queue somewhere.. Also THREAD SMS ..good grief..this is not rocket science..if the ancient PALM OS can do it..surely the "more advanced" MS platform can as well...

I guess in general human factor stuff with WM5 is the biggest gripe for me... while all devices like the PPC may not be so one handed friendly... MS could do a lot of good in this area to make one-handed use for devices like the PPC much better...

Afterall these are handheld devices.... me thinks somebody at MS has missed the proverbial boat here Whilst the soon to be dead Palm OS still has the best Human Factor engineering going!

So until I finally make the strained transition to my WM5 PPC i still carry my trusty Treo for now in the left pocket as my trusty companion to do things quick.

This is mine too...sometimes if I lose service w/active data connection, I either get the "cannont find modem" or the EV just sits there, the arrows move, then back to big EV.

Usually, 8 times out of 10, cycling through Flight Mode will fix it, but it can be annoying sometimes.

Other than that, wish it had a hard button switch, like the Treo, to put phone into Vibrate/Silent mode. That woulda been killer.

Speed could be better but 90% of the time I'm okay with it. Overall I'm very happy with the stability and I love the Today screen.

All this makes me feel good. So what is coming after the 6700. I am hoping to skip a generation.

My gripe is RECEPTION. I loved this phone, but ended up selling it because I could no longer receive calls in my house Volume and speakerphone just added more frustration. I loved everything else. Was sorry to see it go..just couldn't pick cool factor over dropping calls constantly.

I wonder what is next too. The Hermes line is next for GSM users and to be honest I LOVE it. I'm not too sure what could be done to make it an upgrade and not just a revision though. I wouldn't mind a non slider type like a Treo. I also would like to see the 3g .3MP video conferencing camera. EvDO Rev A. No antennea. The different key layout like the Hermes, both front and internal keyboard. 2.1MP camera with macro mode for closeups. VGA would own all, but I dont know if the screen is physically large enough for that to be useful and am almost 100% sure we won't be seeing that feature. A MUCH faster processor, I wouldn't mind seeing 1GHz. I also would like more ram/rom but am pretty doubtful of getting that too. Access to the A-GPS function would be a nice perk, but not liikely. I bet that we get transflash (MicroSD) in the next revision, this will likely upset some people. Better battery life would be nice aswell. Maybe give an 1800mAh from the factory. Damn I need to work for HTC. If anyone knows where to apply or submit some drafts let me know. The future of convergence is going to be HUGE. I am very excited about it.

Lonzo

EDIT Forgot to list what annoys the piss out of me.
The landscape swithch. Damnit why can't I just keep it in landscape at ALL times. Sldier open or closed no switching. If I could take that magnet out without voiding my warranty it would be gone.

My major gripe is that the stylus falls out easily. I am on my 4th and never lost on for 2 years with my 6600, and have never lost one with my prior PPC phones.

FWIW - My reception is better with the 6700 than my 6600.

The phone reception has been as good for me as my v710 in almost all instances. i cant imagine living without this phone but that being said. The DSOD has got to be the most annoying thing out there. I have to reset every morning and sometimes throughout the day when the phone enters sleep mode. Any fixes on this yet?

I hate how you have to click on the screen to get it to write text after you have entered an address or phone number in the field above...why cant you tab or press down....why does that scroll the screen down instead of putting the cursor at the top of the text field so you can begin typing the message?

Every few weeks or so, the pocket outlook will flush my extra pop3 accounts and they appear to be gone. but when i go to add that account it says the name is taken...so for example i have to add the same account name again with all the settings but also add a number to differentiate the account, i am several digits into these new accounts because i cant seem to find the original accounts.

Having to close apps is annoying, why cant they just build magic button in?

I am fine with the volume but only because i hacked it and because i use a headset at all times. It would also be nice if the bluetooth stack was a little better.

Not being able to record both sides of the conversation unless i have the unit on speakerphone.

I have most of the gripes listed here as well. I was just seriously thinking about switching BACK to my 6600! I'll sell the 6700 with all the accessories on ebay.

I am not selling my 6600, which is bombproof and working just fine, but my contract runs out soon and was hoping to get something new. If I had to get the 6600 again I would love to get a 4-band European version with GSM included for travel. Unfortunately the software seems to be carier specific so I doubt a quad version would have worked here. In any case, I am afraid that whatever comes next it will not have the large 6600 screen, which to me is a major plus.

I can deal with the lags in screen rotation and program launching ... but two things that are quite horrible:

1.) Speaker phone volume entirely too low. I still have to hold it to my head like a phone to hear the speaker.

2.) The screen is next to useless in sunlight.

1. Standard onscreen dial pad keys too small (replaced with eten)
2. Hard to use in direct sunlight
3. Notification sound bug.

Most of the other stuff listed above ether does not happen to me or it is so rare it doesn't bother me.

.

In addition to MANY of what is previously listed, including the above:

The Joystick Rubber Pad falling off!

Not bing able to see the screen in direct sunlight is a real problem. Really!!!
And the dialpad issue...I can't stand Eten. Uses too much memory for taste.

Edit: I have NOT had the DSOD issue. I have had the MiniSD wipe itself twice in four months of owning the 6700.

I have a problem with the limited built in memory which wouldn't be so bad if the external storage card wasn't unmounted everytime the power was turned off.
