Im looking for tips to optimize the camera. All of the photos come out pretty poor- I havent found the camera to be of much practical use. Anyone have any tips/tweaks?
Unless the subject is stationary, I always use burst mode and delete the pix I don't want. The bottom line is that the shutter speed is way too slow and most pictures do end up blurry.
The frustrating thing for me about the camera is that when i take the photo the image that gets frozen immediately when I snap it looks great then it goes into its saving and comes back with a crap picture. Any ideas about why that might be? (other than previously mentioned)

The trick is to use 640X480 (don't use the highest native res 1280x1024--way too slow, and 1600x1280 just stretches the image--useless) and hold the camera still for a few secs after you press the button, or in other words, hold your breath until the picture appears again, with the trashcan icons etc. The first pic you see when the preview freezes is not the picture you took! Most likely you are hitting the button, you see what you think is the final pic, then you move the camera to put it away, or to review your image, and meanwhile the camera is actually recording a blurred picture of your crotch... I used to do this a lot!
Also, change the image format to JPEG in Fine mode, the BMP files just waste memory and give virtually no visible improvement. Also turn the sharpness all the way down, the sharp filter they use is pure crap and just serves to add white speckles to the image. Any shareware image editor does a better job of sharpening. Try to shoot in well lit areas as the LED is crap unless you are shooting in macro mode, and even then it tends to glare too much. Oh, and if your pics are still blurry even when shooting with a steady hand, check that you are not shooting with the lens in macro (closeup) mode! (macro is enabled if the lens ring is pointing to the little flower)
As others have said, phone cameras are pretty crappy as a whole, and while this one is pretty good compared to the average phone cams, it is very poor as far as modern digital cameras go. That said, it is still pretty useful. I use mine mostly for reminders, taking pics of CDs or books I'm interested in so I can order them online later. It came in really handy last week when I got hit on the way to work, I was able to take pics of my damage and the other guy's too, as well as the location of the accident and his license plate. Unfortunately, I forgot about the video recording features, or I would have gotten his exact words when he basically admitted guilt at the scene, then told his insurer that it was my fault!
I also tend to see a lot of movie stars and full-blown location shoots in my part of town, so it's nice to have a camera at the ready on a moment's notice so my wife believes me when I get home.
there is a camera hack thread in this forum that helps a lot - do a search.
I am using the hack and what it does is when you snap the picture the image that 'splashes' on the screen actually IS the picture that is taken - amazing - it also seems to *slightly* speed up the time from pushing the button till getting the final screen whith the trash icon.
As an aside I am going to try using less sharpening that suggestion makes sense...
Burst seems to work well, although it is a seriously crippled camera. Haven't tried the hack yet, maybe over the summer when there's some more time...
I think if this thing had a decent camera (even 2-3MP) and a decent shutter speed, I'd never consider anything else... I'd much rather carry this alone than this and a camera too.
