XV6700--Lost ability to play MP3s as ringtones (noteM conflict)

Hi. I have a XV6700, and up until a couple of days ago I was able to set MP3 files as ringtones (they're stored in the \Windows\Rings folder). The other day I installed the MP3 recording app noteM, and I think it mucked something up with the subsystem, because now the device won't let me use MP3 files as ringtones. If I set the ringtone to one of my MP3s (in the Settings/Phone area), and click the arrow to preview it, it doesn't play. And it also defaults back to the Windows Default sound, rather than leaving it set to my MP3 file choice. It will play WAVs and even MIDI files as ringtones fine still. But like I said, up until a couple of days ago, MP3s worked fine as ringers.

Does someone know the registry key(s) that might allow the use of MP3s as ringtones (or some other fix)? It's running WM5 of course. Thanks.

I had the same exact problem, and posted the solution here. http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/s...t=66069&page=2

What had happened was when I installed GSPlayer (media player to stream shoutcast), it was set as the default media player. I had to go into the GSPlayer settings, and uncheck mp3 as the default mp3 player. This allowed me to set mp3's as ringtones.

Since you have a different application installed, I don't know where to direct you, but try and find a setting so you can uncheck your application as the default mp3 player.

Hope this helps!

I do appreciate your post, but no, that's not it. I have set MP3s to be played by TCPMP, and by Windows Media, but the system will still not set the MP3s as ringtones. I have a file association editor, and have changed the assignment for MP3s a couple times, like I said, to those two different programs, but even with MP3s defaulting to opening with Windows Media Player, the system won't set them as ringtones.

I don't suppose anyone knows the registry keys/settings to allow MP3s as ringtones?

Again, thanks for the help.

Also, again, I think the phone lost the MP3 ringtone ability after I installed the freeware noteM MP3 recorder program. That must've munged the registry in some way.

When you play the mp3 from the file manager, which application does it play in? It should play in WMP if you want to use it as a ringtone. If it plays in the other program, you should try to find a setting to disable default mp3 playback.

drop the mp3 ringtones in your storage card main directory.

Thanks, but like I said, I've set them to play in WMP, and the phone still won't "recognize" them as proper MP3 ringtones, even though they are. Up until a couple days ago, they played fine as ringtones. I can set it to open up MP3s in WMP when I tap on them in File Manager, but still no dice on ringing.

It's not the Windows Shell extension (.mp3 files opening up in Windows Media) that's the problem here. I think in order for the device to play any sound as a ringtone, the system has to "pass" the audio to the phone, and I think noteM's installer overwrote some registry keys that messed up this "passing". Does anyone know what the noteM installer actually does? That would help.

Just an update: I gave up and hard reset. Getting everything restored really only took an hour and a half, so I probably should've done that sooner rather than waste all that time trying to fix it through the registry.

All my music file types: wav, midi and mp3 work as ringtones now (like they did before installing noteM). Therefore I say.....BEWARE of noteM on the XV6700!
