That happens on mine also. I think the sync relationship messes up and the phone settings won't match the PC settings.
With the phone NOT connected to the PC:
On the PC, open ActiveSync, under File, Delete Mobile Device.
On the phone, goto Programs, open ActiveSync, then Menu, Options, select your PC and press Delete.
Now when you connect to the PC, ActiveSync should set up a new relationship and ask what items you want to sync.
Another possibility but you don't describe these issues: Sometimes ActiveSync will put up a dialog box behind the main information box. The program is waiting on your input but you can't see it. Then when you exit ActiveSync which seems to be stuck, you suddenly see the dialog box but it is too late since ActiveSync has closed. If you see this happening, just keep all programs minimized when you connect the phone and then nothing can hide the pop up box.
