Question possible to access A-GPS data on 6700??

Ive had an XV6700 for several months now.
I've owned 3 previous types Verizon phones and on each
I was able to by some means read my own location coordinates
using Verizon's cell triangulation (pseudo GPS)

How do I get access to or read this data on my XV6700?

I've not seen any posts on this subject and it would be REALLY NICE
to be able to do this on this phone!!!

It would be VERY useful to be able to do this on this phone because you
can actually go to a mapping website and plug in/save the read
coordinates and see where you are on the map!

The 3 other phones can get the coordinates just fine.... but no web browsing

Sorry I don’t have an answer, but I am curious what phones let you get that data? I always understood that the "gps" data was put together by the telco on the back end, so the phones never actually had the actual data. Interesting to find out that it isn't that way after all.

H!

I have done this on several different of Verizon's cheap LG phones.
My previous was a Samsung A670 which has lots of info on how to do it
on the web.

You basically go into diag mode and turn on on screen debugging.

then you dial either 911 or 922 and hit send.

Both work, 922 does not place a 'real' emergency call but gives you
a test audio feed of some sort (with Verizon).

as soon as the call is in session you get your own GPS coordinates on the screen.

If I plug them into Google Map or mapquest it good within about 500 feet!

Also... a particular beauty of this is that it works quite well indoors! where you cant get a normal GPS satellite fix.

Anti-Flaming measure

922 + send only seems to work on Verizon's network...
if you are roaming it *may* redirect you to
a 911 operator.

If you get one, let them know you are testing
your phone, and for good measure you may let them know right away the
call is a non-emergency

Hey!!!!

Got it! and it works like a champ!
about 100 foot accuracy indoors in the basement.

Here's a few photos of my phone in action (reading A-GPS)
and a mapshot showing where my phone was (haha).

http://stuff.michiganbroadband.com/xv6700-gps/

The trick is to dial ##debug and send (Gee!)

Found the info here:
http://www.evdoforums.com/about2431.html (Thanks Scott!)
Been searching for that for 2 months now just not looking in the right place.

It's working great!

Nice work, Steve. Hopefully this will prove useful for someone to make an app that can mine the data for use with programs like Mapopolis, TomTom Navigator, etc.

Mine is showin N/A for all of the GPS info. Time to mess with it...

Doesn't work for Sprint. There is no GPS mode only 1X and HDR. Anyone know how to activate the GPS mode???

Like a previous poster noted, mine too also displays all "N/A" for the GPS menu. Can you shed some light on how you got the actual data to display?

Thanks, this is another cool find...

I played arround with the registry and if you go to...

HKLM/Software/OEM/FieldTrial

and change DisablePage from a value of 4 to a value of 0, the GPS page will be visible on a Sprint phone. (You do not need to reboot the phone after this change.)

NOTE::: After enabling the page, all the fields are filled with N/A so there really isn't any point to making this change unless someone can come up with a way to actually enable the feature.

Hey guys, on Verizon you must first go into settings and make sure
location is turned ON.

Do this by opening the phone APP
MENU
OPTIONS
Then click the SERVICES tab at the bottom of the screen
Highlight Location Setting
and click GET SETTINGS

Click LOCATION ON radio button

and 'ok yerself outta that
Now bring up your phone app again.

and dial ##debug and press TALK

Do you now have a choice of 1X HDR or GPS?

If so pick GPS

IF no GPS available soft reset the phone and try it again
still not there?

There is a hack to bring GPS options into the control panel
but I have no idea if that has anything to do with this A-GPS stuff.
I don't think so.

I'm also running the current (old) Verizon ROM as we have not got any update
for it yet like you Sprint guys.
not sure if that matters either

Anyhow now if you do have the GPS option you should now see
all the fields along with all the N/A fields

at this point bring the phone app back up and dial 922 and hit talk

I'm not sure what happens with Sprint but with Verizon you get some type of audio test stream and GPS DATA!!!!

All of the N/A fields will become populated...

If you need a sanity test (at your own descretion) make a test 911
call and tell the operator you are testing your phone's GPS feature
and that it is a non-emergency or whatever you prefer to tell them.

you should definitely get GPS readings when you dial and (send) 911

Also I'm not sure if "922" is just a verizon thing or some kind of universal
'test emergency' number.

If anyone could shed some light on that it would be appreciated.

Dialing "922" on a verizon phone somehow makes it get GPS data.
And MANY verizon phones not just an XV6700
Really wierd I'd like to know more about it.

Steve

You could try dialing 911 and see if that works...

on my xv6700 entering 922 and talk generates a verizon message that i have entered a nonworking number. other than that, the ##debug brings up the three choices but the gps is all 'n/a'.
