hard reset vs soft reset? disable startup sound? phone icon replaced??

I've had my xv6700 a few months now and reset it tons of time, but am still not clear on a hard reset vs. a soft reset. When I stick the pen in the hole in the bottom (no comments please), which is that? I've been thinking of doing the junkware hack, but since this requires doing both a hard and a soft reset, I need to know the difference.

On the more interesting stuff, when I reset my phone (via the hole or when a program resets it such as spb backup), my phone plays this little piano riff and sometimes vibrates. It does it over and over sometimes overlapping, but eventually at increasing intervals and eventually stopping all together. The thing takes forever to reset and is very slow at first, but if I eventually get the volume down, then it just vibrates. There is no notification and I've gone through and turned off all of the event sounds to no avail. I seem to have to reset the phone regularly, so this is more than a passing pain. Any way to stop this? I don't remember it doing it when I first got the phone.

Finally, I've been using magic button quite happily, but recently my phone icon got replaced by a generic windows icon. Any idea how to get the phone icon back?

Thanks.

Pen in the hole is a soft reset. All data is preserved.

Holding down both menu buttons (left and right) and press the reset button on the bottom once. Then say Yes. This is a hard reset. Factory Resets your device like it was out of the box. No data is preserved.

Thanks. One follow up question: after a hard reset, do I redo whatever they did at the Verizon store to setup the phone number, data, etc?

No, but you loose your address book ect and you need to re install any apps you put on the device.. Data on the miniSD should not be lost but apps installed there will not function until you reinstall them.

This phone has something of a bug which causes notifications and reminders to "build up" over time and stop functioning correctly. You may have noticed that your calendar/task/appointment reminders are not working correctly. Google ScaryBear or MemMaid, those are both programs designed to fix that problem.

Yes. For all intents and purposes, hard-resetting your phone is like formatting your hard drive and re-installing Windows XP. If you have an SD card, that is like an additional hard drive (or partition) that stays intact, but any programs installed there will not work until you reinstall them.
