How are the Arkon Vent holders "holding up"? :P

Hey guys,
I'm ready to buy a GPS setup from buygpsnow. THey throw in a vent holder for free for the 6700. I was wondering how those who have received the package thought about the vent holders.

Thanks!

The holder is good quality and works great. My only issue is I hate blocking the vents so I use a spare XM radio mount and it works great. Was thinking of the seidio mount but this has me suprisingly satisfied.

BTW, i had an excellent experience with buygpsnow.

I ordered from Semsons but they bundle the same mount and I like it a lot too. The best thing about it is that it rotates from portrait to landscape with ease (I use TomTom's 3D mode in landscape mode).

I did not order a package (had already bought TomTom). I first bought the i-blue due to its power saving features but was decidedly unimpressed with its ability to pull in satellites. Came to my senses and returned it for a Holux GPSlim 236 (which just shipped today). Semsons was great about the return--highly recommend them, although I've heard good things about buygpsnow too.

i'll give another big thumbs up to buygpsnow, they shipped my holux gpslim quickly, with a good price. and threw in the arkon vent mount and a external antenna for the holux.

OT

the vent mount works as well as expected for such a universal mount. It has to fit any vent with any phone.

A couple issues I have with it:

because it is universal the fit is not very tight, as in it moves around quite a bit with the phone in it. Side to side and bouncing a lot up and down over bumps. I plan on fixing the problem with some foam. It might fit your car perfectly but the fit on mine is not the greatest.

because of the loose fit it scuffed up my dash a bit from sliding back and forth. I now have a piece of electrical tape where it rubs on the dash.

The clips that go onto the vent slits have "streatched" out over time and don't clip on as well. Still secure but definitely not as tight.

It also has messed up my vent a bit, I had taken the clip off and the vent no longer closes properly where the clip was attached.

So I am not thrilled with it but it was free and does its job. I still use it for gps navigation.

I just wish my dash had not gotten scuffed and the vent had not gotten damaged, not a huge deal but the car is an 05 and sucks to have any damage.

I got the Holux GPS Slim 236 iguidance bundle and love it. My wife has the 700w and I purchased the Holux/CoPilot bundle for her and it too is great. Both of my purchases were from buygpsnow.com. Good price, fast shipping, can't ask for much more.

I use Arkon products and wouldn't recommend the vent holders just on the mere physics of it. Use the glass mount they are going to be much more stable over time and offer more and better features. Your vents will flop, and come out of the dash over time due to the added weight which they were never designed to take. Glass mounts are illegal in some states however I’ve never had a cop give me a ticket for using one, and I’ve been stopped plenty of times and live in a state where they are quote unquote illegal. They would rather see you using that hands free than talking on it while driving with your hands.

Mine works Ok other than as already pointed out - it blocks the vent.

I noticed in the winter that the smartphone got very warm from the hot air, but I don't think it got hot enough to cause any damage.

My problem is that the PPC 6700 is virtually useless during a sunny day as I cannot read the screen. I made a hood out of cardboard to block the sun for mine but that doesn't really do the job.

So my solution is to use my Treo 650 which has a much brighter screen.

I agree with you that the screen is not bright enough. I imagine the battery life would be even worse if they made it brighter.

Anyway, have you tried using an anti-glare screen protector? It works pretty well in the car most of the time if I have the brightness turned up all the way.

I paid like $5 extra to upgrade from the buygpsnow free Arkon vent mount to a suction cup (windshield) mount. Much better IMO... The GlobalSat BT338 is a "match made in Heaven" for the 6700 and works great, even in the back seat of a car where my Blue Logger would lose its fix. Got both for $114 shipped--highly satisfied.

My vote if for the suction cup windshield mount as well. I drive a Yukon and couldn't find a solution with proclips or anyone else that positioned the 6700 where I could easily see the detail of the maps, etc. I have the 14 inch windshieild mount coupled to the universal vent mount. It took a bit of trial and error but I now have it positioned so that the 6700 overhangs the dash near my gear shift and if I ever get around to getting glasses/ contacts I will have a great set-up that I can without effort...

I would be afraid of a vent mount holder. think of this Your driving along your PPC is in the vent holder getting cold, you arrive at your destination, you grab your ppc and get out of the car and BOOM instant condensation!!!!!! Im sure this is happening and cant be good for the unit.
