WiFi on a CDMA phone in a GSM-only area - does it work??
I've got a 3+ year old near-dead Kyocera 7135 and will have to soon replace it with a 6700 or a Treo 700 P or W. WiFi is a big discriminator here. There have been a lot of debates in the forums over the usefulness of WiFi in a world of EVDO and on the lack of this wifi feature on yet another new Palm Treo (700P). No one seems to have ever brought up the potential to use WiFi to access email via the web when traveling in GSM-only areas or countries. Am I missing something here? Does anyone here - the area of 6700 experts - know for certain whether or not a WiFi-enabled CDMA phone will work for internet access in a GSM area?

Exactly. WiFi is WiFi. If there's a WiFi hotspot available, then you can use it. Whether you're in a GSM or CDMA area has nothing to do with it.

If WiFi, then also VOIP?
Thanks - so if WiFi works at any hot spot for a CDMA phone even in a GSM-only country, then has anyone gotten Voice Over IP to work? If so, then any CDMA phone with WiFi can become an international phone. That's very useful to travelers! Has anyone had experience with VOIP using WiFi on a 6700?

There's a thread going on about Skype VoIP, and it works on the 6700 (I've been using it on mine).

GPRS is NOT 3G. It is 2.5G. 3G is based on W-CDMA technology. EGRPS is a better version of GRPS which was mind numbingly slow.

i use voip
i use SJPhone on my 6700 with my company's Asterisk voip server and a wifi connection. works great as long as the wifi connection is decent.
sjphone won't work with the built-in earpiece, so i have to use a bluetooth headset (not a big deal, because I use one anyway).
i travel to mexico a fair amount. i've come to find that many of the villas we rent have wireless internet access, which is nice because I can never use my phone in those areas. is it because mexico is GSM? does anyone know?
even if my phone worked, i wouldn't want to use it because i'd get torn apart on roaming charges!

No more international roaming
This news is great for travelers who've endured international roaming charges, which are outragous or had to rent a GSM phone from Verizon or Sprint. It also answers the argument made by Treo folks that WiFi doesn't really matter if you have EVDO. It certainly does matter if you're sitting in London without any CDMA coverage of any type and want to check your email on the web or your voicemail over Skype.

I'm going to Denmark in a few days, do you think I can use this while I'm there. I have been looking for a way to call back to the states without renting a phone or getting an international phone card. I have already called sprint and they said the phone service will not work, however the hotel I am staying in has wifi....does skype allow you to call from outside of the states?

Yes you can use Skype from anywhere, generally. You'll just need to put some money on your account for SkypeOut calls (and pay for SkypeIn if you want to receive calls)

keep in mind you can also use your skypeIN account to give others the ability to call you at a local area code regardless of your location - so since i am in 305 and have a 305 skypeIN number...if i travelled to europe and signed on to skype in a hot spot, someone could call me at my 305 skypeIN number and i would receive it in europe...no extra charge!
