The T-Mobile MDA was just released not too long ago, and I'm scratching my head right now... what the hell is the difference between that and the XV6700 besides the shell? Same OS, with all the same software features, 1.3MP camera with flash, blue tooth, WIFI... I'm lost. Someone help me out.
One minor difference I noticed which would be a total dealbreaker for me is that the MDA doesn't have "start" and "ok" hard-buttons on the front. They exist if you flip the keyboard out, but not on the face. Big thumbs down on that IMO.
They are based on different HTC models. The MDA is the "Wizard" and the 6700 is the "Apache" I think.
The Wizard has a ~200 MHz dual processor (to help with the pda functions not killing the phone functions). The other is 400 MHz I think. You can grab the details easily enough with some googling
I have tried them both and out of the box, the 6700 is faster. After overclocking my wizard, the difference is hard to see.
I have not used the 6700 for any length of time or for calls, so I can't address that.
Your choice would depend on your carrier. The 6700 is CDMA and the MDA is GSM, so they are not interchangeable.
T-Mobile is GSM and Edge, while Sprint/Verizon is CDMA and EVDO. EVDO is faster. GSM uses sim cards and is therefore much easier to switch out phones (plus most GSM phones don't have an external antenna).
Processor speed. Radios used. Keyboard keys. Couple hacks work for one and not the other. No start/ok keys on Wizard (8125/MDA). That is about it. EvDO is 3G and Edge is 2.5G. I won't be going back to GSM until they get HSDPA/UMTS in my area. Then I will be rocking an HTC Hermes and hopefully an updated Razr with a transflash slot.
I had the T-Mobile MDA for about a week and a half before I sent it back and got the Verizon XV6700. There were some features about the MDA that I liked over the XV6700. It sat in the hand a little more comfortably, I liked the keyboard better and I liked the placement of the keys. Someone said it did not have OK and Select buttons. That's true. However, the MDA places two buttons on the side that you can remap. I actually liked their placement because if you are right handed and hold the phone in your left hand the buttons are under your index finger and thumb. I remapped them for OK and Select and that worked better than the placement on the Verizon phone.
Some of the things I didn't like about the MDA were
1) Processor is 197 Mhz vs. 416 Mhz. It makes a world of difference. When I would start my GPS software, forget about doing anything else. It was too slow to be functional. That by itself was a complete deal breaker.
2) The stylus is TINY. It's about half the length of the Verizon stylus. It was like using a pencil that had been sharpened to a nub.
3) Edge is noticably slower than EVDO. No comparison.
4) Bluetooth head set performance was poor. I tried two different head sets and both had static.
5) Poor customer support. I had a problem with getting it working with ActiveSync, I called their tech support and was told I could wait on hold for at least an hour or wait for them to call me back. I chose to have them call me back. And they did, TWO WEEKS LATER.
I got the Verizon phone and I've been happy as can be.
ok, I have the sprint PPC6700, and my friend has the Tmobile crap.
and I must admit, in certain ways, I am really jealous.
Most of what everybody says is true, EVDO blows EDGE away, the sylus sux, and there's no 'Windows' or 'OK' key. the keys and the EVDO things are enough to make me NEVER switch.
But the places where I am jealus, are the screen brightness and external speaker volume.
On the Tmobile crapphone the screen is Waaay brighter! I was so mad because I thought my screen was fine, until I held mine up to his. no comparison! grrrrrrr
And the worst thing that reallyy bothers me... His speaker. its actually loud! he can actually use his phone as a speaker phone! and rings (which use the same speaker) are loud also! it actually sounds like a normal phone.
The speaker volume is a huge deal to me. I so wish my phone had this feature.
On the other hand, their keyboard is ugly. childish. looks like a tmobile sidekick rather than a grown up Windows Mobile machine.
