Exclamation WARNING: ActiveSync 4.2 cannot USB sync w/ Exchange ("could not contact server...")

Moderators: I think this issue may be PPC-6700 specific enough to leave in this forum.

I installed ActiveSync 4.2 beta over top of 4.1 and subsequently lost the ability to USB sync with my exchange server (2003 w/all SP and updates). I tried everything to resolve this, even wiping PPC and re-installing 4.2. Problem persisted, and wiping all again and installing 4.1 resolved the problem.

I was getting the "could not contact server--could be temporary network conditions..." error. I was able to sync OTA, so it wasn't a cert/security issue.

BE cAREFUL if you're in a MS Exchange environment!

There do not seem to be many experimenting with this software (for good reason). Has anyone noticed if 4.2 improves consistency of large file transfers? 4.1 and lower seem to drop at 8-10MB (known problem). The general discussion on this topic seems dead.

same here, actually with 4.1 i had this wierd proble that i couldnt explore the PPC b/c it would just take me to my C drive instead of the phone... 4.2 completely fixed this and i can still sync with my exchange server with no problem whatsoever.... maybe some other thing is affecting it maybe something is conflicting with you computer... just a guess, firewall???

Are you syncing to an Exchange server? I wiped everything, including deleting the partnership with the mobile admin web form (remote wipe, delete) and 4.2 simply would not work.

EDIT: My Q was for "justauser"--the previous post and mine were simultaneous.

Red face Fool me once, shame on you--fool me twice...

Well seeing someone apparently made this work, and being the STUBBORN S.O.B. that I am, I tried again and...

Same result--irreperably broken.

For those who made this work, did you install 4.2 over top of 4.1, or do a fresh install? I wouldn't have risked this if I weren't migrating to a new laptop (Dell Precision M90 workstation) tomorrow, anyhow. Gonna wipe the PPC again and start over as part of the process.

I have the same problem with AS 4.1 Before setting up push email I was able to do USB passthrough (cradle) sync with my Exchange 2003 SP2 server Now I can sync OTA but not on the cradle. I get the "could not contact server" message on the phone and code 85002003 on the PC.

So this problem may not be specific to AS 4.2.

UPDATE: Went into Activesync on the PC, File > Connection Settings and in the "This computer is connected to" selection box, selected "Internet" or "Automatic" INSTEAD OF "Work" and found I could initiate manual syncs over USB. It's still not syncing automatically when changes occur, but manual is better than nothing. So, those of you having problems with this in either AS 4.1. or 4.2 might want to play with the "this computer is connected to" settings.
