How well does Wifi work on the 6700??

I currently have an i730 and have loved it except that the wifi is awful. I can be standing 2 feet from my router and it will still only show 1 bar of reception (if at all). Since that was one of the main factors when I bought the phone, I'm thinking of switching to something that works better. How well does the wifi work on the 6700?

I had an I730 too and while I didn't have reception problems in terms of signal, there were many - way too many - routers that just wouldn't work. But the 6700 I have now has had zero problems connecting to routers and signal was good.

It works well. I have a basic 802.11 router and I get good coverage through the house and even outside. No issues with connecting or maintaining connected.

I'm posting this from my 6700 right now connected to my home wi-fi network. Connection is just as good as the computer in this room, which is in the opposite corner of the house.

I'm a very new user to the 6700 and I just got it configured for our wap. Setup was a breeze and it instantly found our netgear router. Works fantastic so far with speeds rivaling the broadband connection on the desktop systems and notebooks.

It's absolutely terrific with wi-fi and if you instal WiFiFoFum, you can do some killer wardriving, without lugging around a laptop.

WiFiFoFum gives you a 'radar map' of close hotspots and if you have a GPS unit hooked up, it will even locate them directly. SO it makes it easier to find that favorite place to surf outside of your home.

I have had both a base 11b and a newer 11g wifi unit and had no trouble at all connecting or using the 6700 with these.

Two downsides to the Wifi.

1) it sucks the standard battery dry, so much so the battery gets hot after about 15 minutes

2) if you have your email set up to check every so often (I have it set for 60 minutes), outlook doesn't detect that you have wifi enabled and doesn't give it a chance to hook up to an access point (takes about 8 seconds on average), so the phone dials the EVDO to check the email. Aaargh, probably a MS Mobile 5.0-ism, not necessarily phone's fault.

I went from an i730 to a XV6700, and I can say that the i730 was basically unuseable for WIFI access, and the XV6700 works every time I use it to connect.

Works great when I can get it going. I got to use it at my gym today which has wifi access. Hooked up no problem and ported my email right to the phone (which rocks). The only issue I'm having is getting to hook up with my home network which is protected by an encryption key. I can't get the stupid thing to accept the key....

Awesome! thanks for the help...now i wont have to buy any data package! how does verizon know that you are connected to WIFI rather than using the phone itself to get to the internet? is there anything i should make sure is turned off when i connect via wi-fi? just curious.

When you are connected to WIFI there is no way for Verizon to even know you are on the internet. If you really wanted to play it safe you can turn off the radio portion of the phone if it puts your mind to ease.

Just to clarify, you never pay Sprint or Verizon data charges when using wi-fi on the 6700. But you may be liable for WI-FI connection charges if you are in a place that charges for wi-fi use.

But keep in mind there's no way to NOT know you are at such a place. There's no magic way for these places to charge you unless you pay them or input a credit card or whatever. To my point to the original poster, is don't be worried about incurring any unknowing charges by using Wifi wherever you are. If its a pay for it place, you will know. Usually you connect to it, then load IE, and the first page you see will be a page asking you to login/pay. But there is no way to just incur random wifi charges
