PRL Update Then HUGE Speed Increase in NYC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought a 'red logo' 6700 on eBay a few weeks ago. I RARELY got more than 200-300k on dslreports at work in midtown, and it was around 150k most of the time. (Probably 60% below 200k, 20% 200-300, 20% 300-400).
Then i did the PRL upgrade, and now I'm getting 400-500k+ CONSISTENTLY (80%+).
If your PRL is sorely out of date (as I assume mine was), this might be worth a try.
I doubt it is a time of day / day of week issue. I was getting 150k around this time for weeks, and I couldn't crack 180 this morning before the upgrade.
Be warned, though, I asked for this upgrade almost two weeks ago and I just got it by dialing *2 half an hour ago.
EVDO super-speeds ARE possible in NYC!
Hehe - look at Egress' update speed now. I can't wait to try streaming again.

I was in NYC (mid town) around New Years Day and got good EV-DO speeds the entire time with the then-current PRL (16, 17?). This was an "old logo" phone. SlingPlayer Mobile worked great, too (hehe ).

"Preferred Roaming List" Basically a set of instructions that your phone follows when using a roaming signal. Sprint told me it selects the tower with the lowest rate/minute to minimize Sprint's roaming costs (on Alltell/Verizon towers).
I have no idea how this would improve reception on Sprint's network, or for that matter, data speeds, but people swear up and down it does. Who knows.

My guess is that not all towers have EV-DO at the time of the old PRL, so the phone may have been looking for a more distant tower that was EV-DO confirmed.
I'm averaging 400-500k consistently at the same spot and same time I was getting 100-200 yesterday.

Great to hear that you're getting good speeds, but I don't think the PRL would have anything to do with it.
A PRL update only deals with priority on roaming towers, and since you're not roaming it wouldn't apply. Even if Sprint plopped a new tower in your neighborhood your phone should find it regardless of what PRL you have.

So I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I remember reading about Sprint upgrading to EVO-1, which will improve EVO speed, in major metro areas in the "near" future. Another "but" I understood that the upgrade wouldn't apply to this device.

Why does PPC PRL (example 20219) differ from 'regular phone' PRL (example 10219) ? I thought I read something a few months ago that EVDO devices had EVDO tower info inside PRL, which explains the difference. Can anyone confirm? If this is true, this is a slightly new use of PRL which in the past contained mainly roaming-related info.

That's a good question, I hadn't thought of that. Still, it would seem very strange to me that a Sprint phone would have to be "told" by the PRL what towers are native. Again, if Sprint puts a new EVDO tower up in my backyard, my phone should find it without having to rely on a PRL. For that matter, the phone should see any CDMA signal whether it's Sprint's or not. The PRL is only there to give priority to certain carriers when there's more than 1 roaming signal around. -at least that's how it's always been explained to me by the network geeks

When i'm roaming, I can't use the EVDO connection. My ppc 6700 gives me a message saying that I'm not allow to use EVDO while i'm roaming. Is this common?

Yes. You can't data-roam at all, either EVDO or 1x. Hopefully this is something that Sprint will allow in the future, as GSM carriers all allow data roaming.
