I have a bluetooth Holux 236 and TomTom versions 5.0 and 5.2 and both don't work for me. When I open TomTom it says no gps device. When I select "Other bluetooth GPS" theres no option for bluetooth like in version 4.40, plus COM 7 doesn't work either. I tried GPSInfo and I still can't get it to work. I searched many forums and didn't find a solution. Someone please tell me how to get it working. I really would hate to go back to version 4.40.
I have the latest Tom Tom working on my xv6700. I installed it by taking the cab from the setup cd and installing the cab. I then ran the 521 update program from the Tom Tom web site.
I use an i-blue gps receiver but my set up is as follows:
partnered gps with an outgoing port of COM 4
Tom Tom displays Com 4 as an available port and configures immediately.
Make sure you are using 5.21 from the TOM TOM site as this update is WM5 compatible.
tomtom works best with it's own version of GPS receiver. I had a match for all the specs except for the NMEA 0183 v2.2 spec device on an older GPS receiver from Navteq so it just would'nt work even though the GPS receiver was paired on the phone. I decided to just buy their receiver $150 list price and make my life easier. It pairs quickly and comes on in 2 seconds. I'm glad I switched to their receiver as I liked the software. Even their FAQ warns against trying other receivers. I understand some do work but they are slow to respond by comparison to the proper one. I just installed a tomtom on my wife's Treo700w and it actually sensed 4 sats inside our kitchen 5 ft from the window. I couldn't believe it but there we were and accurate too poped up within a few ft with full map zoom!
One more thing, with the tomtom receiver all you need to do before pairing is to set the GPS ap in the systems to auto and forget about picking the com port. Everything will configure automatically after you pair the receiver.
PS- I also hate tomtom's support and their install is the worst I have ever seen.
edit- Also, you can install the website update directly and don't need to do the cab install first as was just posted. At least I didn't need to do that and I've installed it twice now on xv6700 and a Treo700w. You just need to establish your activation codes when you launch the tomtom the first time.
I am very happy with my i-blue receiver and tomtom from buygpsnow.com, it was around $180 I believe. There is suppose to be a new version of TOMTOM coming out in April hopefully. They were saying they may put it all on a dvd now.
Great I just did the update and now it says no maps found. Since version 5.21 is not working at all, does anyone know how to make it work on version 5.0?
Wow, I just got tomtom running on my PPC6700 and holux gpslim236 about an hour ago and it couldn't have been easier (considering all that I've heard about the difficulty).
Tomtom does not play well with older GPS units (like my old Leadtek 9357) so I ordered the gpslim and iGuidance (cuz some said it was better than tomtom).
Here's what I did:
1. Activate the GPS panel using the registry hack (HKEY_Local_maching/ControlPanel/GPS settings...delete "hide" and add Dword "Group" with a dec value of 2). If you don't know how to activate the GPS panel, there are numerous threads covering this specific registry hack. You should reset your device after changing the registry to make the GPS panel appear under the connection settings tab.
2. Under bluetooth options, pair your gpslim with your ppc. The code for your gpslim is 0000. After pairing, go to COM ports under bluetooth and set an outgoing port for the gpslim to COM8. Close bluetooth settings.
3. Open the GPS panel. Set GPS program port to "None," set GPS hardware port to "COM8" with baud rate 4800, and set access to manage GPS automatically.
4. Turn on your GPS and wait till the receiver gets a lock.
5. Fire up Tomtom. If you haven't registered tomtom, u may have to fill in your product and activation codes. It should ask you to set up your gps (if it doesn't, find GPS settings under the change preferences menu. When configuring the program, tap "Other Bluetooth GPS," then tap "COM 8."
7. And tomtom worked great for me.
8. Dance jubilantly now that you can throw your worthless Leadtek GPS receiver away and erase the months of trying to get it to work.
BTW, is it just me or does tomtom seem 10 times better than iguidance?

I don't think these steps (#1 and #3) are necessary since you're configuring TomTom to use COM8 explicitly. The purpose of the GPS applet is to allow you to "virtualize" the port used by GPS devices by assigning a port other than the one that communicates with the hardware ( in your case COM8 ) and letting WM5 manage the communications with the actual hardware so that device can be shared by multiple programs. That's the theory, but I've never gotten it to work, I think because most of the current versions of GPS software are programmed to use a real hardware port and don't use the the WM5 API required to share a single GPS receiver.
Oh and BTW, I think iGuidance is a great GPS program, although I've never used TomTom at all. For a comparison of GPS programs see this chart on the GpsPasSion site.
Good theory. I hadn't tried that at first. Just to test the theory, I repeated the whole process, eliminating steps 1 and 3. After following steps 2,4,5, the tomtom GPS port setting screen no longer had COM8 as a choice. I then tried all other ports and none would link with the GPS. So I went back and added steps 1 and 3 and COM8 appeared again...and connected to the receiver. Very easy.
I don't know if these properties are characteristic of the GPSlim; I was just commenting on my own experiences. In any case, at least iGuidance was much easier to get started. Also, I was just noticing that the GPSpassion page is over a year and a half old...so long ago that iGuidance wasn't around. Certainly some important updates have occurred. Just my .02

I guess TomTom must be programmed to use the WM5 API. I was basing my comments on my experience with iGuidance, which does not require the GPS applet to be configured, and works fine using the same outgoing COM port as what is configured in the bluetooth settings.
Here's another thread on this forum where a user tried a procedure similar to yours in post #14 ( except using COM0 instead of COM8 ) and had to repeat it after each soft reset, but YMMV. The gist of that thread is that TomTom can be a very finicky program unless you use their GPS receiver.
Regarding the GpsPasSion software comparison, it's a little dated but iGuidance is there as a variation of Intellinav 2, which came out very near the top in that comparison.
nickfuzz-I followed your directions and there is no option to select COM 8 under Tomtom bluetooth settings. By the way what TomTom version do you have installed? I have version 5.0 and theres only COM 7 option under TomTom bluetooth settings.
From what I understand you need TomTom v5.21 to work with Windows Mobile 5. The problem at that point is that v5.21 only supports the new Plus maps. Old v4 maps don't work.
Interestingly Ramjet, the way I got iGuidance to work was simply following their directions. I will try using your method for iGuidance since it is simpler. Can't wait to give iGuidance another shot. It should be easy to provide an up-to-date comparison since I have both tomtom and iGuidance...hmm...
If you are using Pirated/Cracked TOMTOM 5.21 it wont work w/MAPS.. To work with Maps, u need to use TOMTOM 5.0 Crack then all the maps work fine w/o need for Activation.
If you own a legal version, then TOMTOM 5.21 should work flawlessly with out much probs.
TOMTOM is the most painful prog I ever tried to get installed, then get it to work. IGUIDANCE Takes 2mins to install and get it up in running.
IGUIDANCE 2.1.3 very highly recommended! So far never crashed on me... and always correct in guiding. I love their SPEED-ALERT Feature.. keeps me on alert if i exceed my speed by 10MPH above speedlimit..
Got it working finally by reading the link ramjet73 posted. This is the step I used if anyone else is having troule installing TomTom.
1. Go to Gps settings change program port to com 0:, hardware (none), check manage gps auto matically.
2. set bluetooth outgoing to com 4:
3. softreset
4.open tomtom and see if com 0 is open.if so , minimumize it.
5. change gps program port to none
6. change bluetooth port to com0
7. on tomtom select com 0 and wait a few seconds for the gps to sync.
thank you nickfuzz and mcjazz1232! i was having all sorts of problems getting the gpslim 236 and tomtom to work together. both of your instructions worked great! thanks!
