ROM update turned my 6700 into a brick, please help

I tried the update. Afterwards the phone was dead. It would neither accept a charge or power on. Nothing.

I talked to sprint. They said after 3 months the warranty is with the manufacturer.

I talked to UTStarcom, the manufacturer, they said this is not a commercial release, they did not release it and do not support it. Therefore I am completely out of luck.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Plenty of people have updated their phones with little or no problems.

Don't be an alarmist. Simply because you happen to have a problem is no reason to yell from the mountaintops to everyone else who don't have problems.

Now, as for your actual problems, I'd get on the horn with sprint. This is not a hardware problem, and regardless of your warranty status, it was caused by software they supplied. They owe you at least reloading the OEM ROM at a sprint store. Do not take 'no' for an answer. Good luck.

That is correct - the software is a Sprint upgrade...they warranty phones against problems from their software.

As for the upgrade...it is fine. The problem you are having sounds pretty unique to your installation. This is not the norm. Did you get confirmation from the installer that it was complete? Any error messages or anything else that didn't seem right?

Hope you get it working again...Sprint will take care of it as long as you are prepared to stand up for yourself in case you get a rep who is unaware of the policy...

same problem

I just wanted to give you a heads up that I had the exact same problem. I called sprint and they wanted to mail me a new phone. I told them that this was not acceptable and they noted my account and i went to a sprint store the next day and got a new one. I did have the old red logo one and really miss the white keyboard lights as it lit up all the buttons(both the ones in red and letters). On a positive note i took back only the phone and the guy at my sprint store gave me all the accessories that normally comes with the phone including the stock battery out of my old phone so i have double everything which is nice.

Have you tried this work around below? It's from the second page of the ROM Update thread sticky at the top of this forum.

1. disable active sync and unplug the USB from the device
2. Press and hold in this order Power->Voice Memo->reset->release all
3. device should say serial
4. plug in USB, should now say USB
5. Make sure device shows up in device mgr
6. activate .exe (New ROM update)

If the above does not work, I would try taking it to a Sprint store. Also, try not to say anything about the failed ROM update install (sometimes the less you say, the better off you are, lol) . Just see if they can warranty it for being dead and provide you with an exchange.

Best of Luck!

You should also get the insurance too, in case you ever did break it.

I'll bet it's recoverable too.

Have you tried just holding down the button? When you first receive it out of the box you need to hold the button down and it comes on. Also there was something in the ROM update thread about a file or something that will jump start it I think. Happy reading.

I'd hope Crowhurst02 can recover his 6700 with help from us or the ROM update thread as well. If he can get it to serial mode, he should be good to go...

serial mode

I'd always had problems with activesync over usb, so the rom upgrade using AS scared me. Once I saw the serial process I felt a lot better because AS tended to lose connection pretty often. I tried it and sure enough it was smooth as buttah. I would actually recommend this technique over AS rom upgrade any day.

another thing ... make sure you're plugged in USB directly. Dont go through a USB hub .. i had issues with going through my USB hub but was able to recover by plugging in directly and starting the process over.

Tried all of the above THANKS - but still nothing

Sprint told me it was out of warranty - over 3 months. Will go to the store and try again.

I am now getting a solid then blinking red light in the upper right. no screen though.

Windows does not show the USB, but it does say that their is something on the USB which has malfunctioned.

Now the red light is off. When i press the reset button the red light comes on for just a second.

Is there a way to reflash this at this point?

Is there some "official" notification from Sprint that this is a valid commercial release update?

Thanks for everyones help.

Try holding record and power while pressing reset. Should go into the bootloader. If you get there, you can flash it again...

Fixed

I followed the pressing power - voice - reset button.

The issue is this - there is no backlight so you can't see the "serial" or the "usb" unless you look carefully.

Thanks!

I'm new to all of this, so could you please explain what you mean by "flash it again". Does that just mean reinstall the rom upgrade?

I had the same problem as the OP where I installed the update and now I can't turn my phone on or even hard reset it. I've done lots of searching around this forum and have figured out how to switch so it says USB and v 3.0, but I don't know what to do after that.

Please help, I just got my phone yesterday and I'm afraid I've ruined it.

Thanks for posting that link! Yes, I've tried it and mine still doesn't work. The only difference is that mine isn't showing up completely in the device manager like he mentioned. It recognizes that something is connected but it doesn't know what it is. There are yellow questions marks over it as well.
