6700 will not charge half the time (no charging light)

has anyone figure out this battery charging problem. my phone doesn't charge half the time. no light indicating charging. I have searched and found problems with usb connection due to cradel but I have no problem with syncing just charging. this is my second phone and both did it once and a while.

thanks, cody

Be SURE that the phone is fully pushed down on the connector of the cradle.
It may look on but not make contact!

I only use the cradle for syncing data and find it unreliable.. I use the power cable directly to charge the unit on my night stand..

The 6700 draws a high amount of current when charging via USB. Some PC USB chipsets will detect an overcurrent situation and shut off the bus power, especially if you have other high-draw devices on the same bus. It's best to connect the power supply to the cradle, or use a powered USB hub in those situations.

The the part about the cradle I don't like is that the PPC doesn't always sit right and make contact.. I haven't had any case where the PC has shut of power, but that could be possible on some systems.

The cradle connector will break in over time and seat much more easily after some regular use.

As for the other thing, the PC itself does not power down, but power to the USB ports is terminated. I've primarily seen this with Dell laptops, especially in dockbars.

what firmware are you using?

I was having this problem as well and was about to contact Sprint regarding a warranty replacement.

My phone would sometimes start charging right away, and other times it just wouldnt do it for nothing.

I updated my firmware yesterday to the latest build (Sprint PPC6700 btw) and it resolved the issue. From what I was reading in the post regarding the new firmware is that with the old firmware the phone had to be in a certain mode (either in sleep mode or out, I do not fully remember) to begin charging at times.

The new firmware fixed it for me

ppc6700 plug power cord in nothing happens?

sometimes randomly when I plug the power cord into my phone to charge it, sometimes it does nothing(doesnt show the 'cord' icon indicating its charging). I have to reinsert it a few times to get it to say its charging. Anybody else have this problem?

Yes, I see the same thing happen on occasions. I found toggling the on/off before connecting minimizes the times it happens (still does happen, but not as frequently)

Same with me. I can't even sync the 6700 to my PC unless I connect it while it's turned off.

If I am docking it to sync I ususaly turn it on first.

If I am plugging it in to charge for the night I ususal have it off.. The green power led should turn solid yellow/amber to indicate it is charging.

yea this has been happening to me too lately. neither the battery icon nor the power light in the top right corner show that it's charging.
i have noticed that the times that the 6700 doesn't show that it's charging has been when i've been using chargers with the same plug, but that were made for other items ( like my gpslim 236 car charger, and the home charger that i use for the motorola bluetooth headset ). i looked at the motorola charger's watts/amps output, and it shows that the amperage output is about half the output (about .5 amps if i remember right) of the 6700's charger (1 amp).
could that have something to do with it?

The voltage (which must be DC!) should match the voltage on the stock 6700 charger and the amerage must be at least as much as the stock charger. You can go over with the amerage but not the voltage! If the amperage is substantially under it will not work. If the charger you are using is up to spec try plugging it in and then turning off the 6700 and then turning it back on. My 3rd party charger is the right specs, but I often have to perform the procedure above and then it works.

I have a similar problem. But i think i know why it lags into showing the light at the top corner or the battery charging icon on the display. I believe on our phone, there is a back-up battery onboard + the battery itself. First what it does is CHARGING the Back-Up Battery(it doesn't take long to get charged up) and when it's done charging the onboard back-up battery, it then goes on to charging the actual battery and then you'll see the light and the icon. i've been observing and thats what i noticed. If you ever read the notfication on when it tells you to charge the battery , there is 2 different message. one is to Charge the MAIN battery and then the other..i don't remember. so hope this helps out. You don't need to plug/unplug the cable. just plug it in and let it sit it will start charging.

p.s. first i thought that my battery have gone bad or the phone is not charging correctly when i didn't see the INSTANT charging light or the charging display on my phone.

I know this is an old thread, but it sounds a lot like what my XV6700 is doing. and along the lines of the last post, I noticed that sometimes I have better luck getting USB charging (without the cradle) to start when the device is switched off (sleeping). Doesn't work 100% of the time, but I seem to have better luck starting from a sleeping state and plugging it in. Sometimes even turning it on AFTER the USB cable is plugged in will initiate charging.

I'm on a Dell Laptop using the direct USB port on the side of the laptop, not the on the docking station port.
