Developer Request: Small app to utilize the built in lock function in new ROM
Can any of you developers out there in PPC land, create a small app that simulates pressing the "device lock" plugin on the today screen every time the phone goes into standby? This would make the new lock feature be 100% useful and also make it fool proof. So every time your phone goes into standby mode (phone screen off, or pressing the off button on top of the phone) this would trigger the today plug in to activate!
What do you all think?

or, can we find out if there is an exe being used to do this. if so we could put a copy of it in the start menu and assign a hardware button to it... Im thinking like one of the press&hold buttons.

Since we're all looking for a good lock app, maybe instead of hacking into the built in lock app, someone should write a custom PPC6700 lock program. The size of an app to hack into the built in program wouldn't be much different in size than a scratch built app.
Perhaps we should define what our dream lock program would look like. I have done some PPC development before, so if there is enough enthusiasm, I could probably be persuaded to write one.
1) Can be enabled to lock whenever the PPC goes into standby.
2) When a phone call comes in, the lock program doesn't lock so you can answer without any hassle.
3) When anything else makes the PPC power on, you can see everything on the screen, but all buttons and the screen are disabled.
4) User configurable unlock scheme. One button, two simultaneous buttons, two sequential buttons, one screen button, two... etc.
5) Turn off screen and lock keys, but keep PPC running.
Since we're on this subject, how closely does Mortsaver match the above?

I may be confused, but the lock doesn't seem to stop the answer button from being pressed if it's in your pocket. I think you still need something like DeltaLock to achieve this. Hopefully I'm wrong, but in my quick test I was able to answer the phone with the green button.
I think mortsaver is perfect except that it kills the sddialer...not sure how it works on the new rom, but right now i love mortsaver and only wish it wouldn't kill sddialer - then it would be perfect...
i've never heard anyone on this forum complain about mortsaver other than the non-existent battery drain issue.
i will post more detailed review of mortsaver with some pics later when i'm home - if someone would write an app customized for our phone it would probably be even better.

Ok so here's 5 screenshots of my mortsaver options. I will try to go page by page and explain my settings and what they do.
1. Deactivation
Screen Off / Power Off Timeout - This setting determines how long the screensaver is displayed. When you activate Mortsaver, a screensaver comes up and does a countdown...at the end of the countdown it will either turn the screen off or power off the device - whichever you select as the default in the options (below). 1st and 2nd Buttons - You can choose which button deactivates Mortsaver. When you turn the device back on or try to wake up the screen, the Mortsaver screensaver will reappear and start the countdown again...at the end of the countdown it will power off or turn the screen off unless you press the deactivate button. It can either be set to 1 button or 2 buttons - as you can see I have mine set to only one button (press and hold camera button...which won't activate the camera btw). As it says, if you do not assign a button, any button will deactivate it. Show countdown after call - When you receive a call, Mortsaver will wake up so you can answer the call. After you answer it, or hangup, it will show the screensaver and do the countdown again. Other application buttons show countdown - This is worded a little funny - pretty certain this has to do with the fact that when you press a button while the screensaver is on, it starts the countdown again. I believe if Mortsaver is in screen off mode (as opposed to power off), any button press other than the deactivate button(s) will show or restart the countdown.
2. Display
Show title bar - This keeps the screensaver from covering up the task bar at the top. Clock display - This one's obvious - the screensaver shows the time and you can determine whether it's shown in AM/PM or 24 hour mode. Show battery meter - This will display the battery level on the screensaver. User text - This allows you to display customizable text on the screensaver so maybe someone who finds you phone and doesn't know which button deactivates Mortsaver can see who you are. I have my name, business phone number and email address here. Colors - let's you set the colors of the screensaver.
3. Power Off / Emergency Exit
Turn off device (not only screen) on activation - clearly indicates that if you don't check this box, it's not going to turn the phone off...just the screen! (this, i believe, is one cause of "increased battery drain with mortsaver"...duh) Turn off device if lock is not removed after power on - this setting is only available (you can see it's grey for me) if you have it set to only screen off. If you have it in screen off mode and the device turns off, this will turn it back off if it wakes up again. Activate Mortsaver every time the device is switched on - this one is only available if you have the first or second box checked (power off, not just screen off) - if i didn't have one of them checked you would see it greyed out. Obviously this will turn Mortsaver on every time the device is turned on, even if Mortsaver wasn't previously active. If it was previously active, it will turn back on itself, as explained above. Emergency exit - Mortsaver will deactivate itself if turned on twice within a user set amount of time - and if you click the show message box, it will show a popup before it does - you can click OK and then it will all turn off. This is useful if you can't remember the button or combination of buttons you had set - if you don't want this feature just set it to 0 or 1 i guess.
4. Screen / Pop-ups
Disable screen off check - i think this is a device specific feature - i have not needed it on our 6700. Allow notification popups - Ok so i'm pretty sure this allows you to see the notifications popup while the countdown is going - so mortsaver will still reactivate after the countdown ends, but it won't reactivate instantly after receiving the message. works fine for me. TPDisable - i have this checked but don't think it works on our phone - i can still access things from my taskbar when the screensaver is on.
5. Phone Features
Delay opening the phone - i have not found this setting necessary. must be another phone specific feature. Show signal strength - shows the signal strength next to the battery indicator. Check for missed calls - This will indicate on the screensaver if you have missed a call. Check for new messages - This will indicate on the screensaver if you have new messages.
Ok so there you have it - if i can clarify or test anything, please let me know. The pictures indicate my current settings, which I have enjoyed great success with...having used Mortsaver since I got the phone when it was first released. Next post I will put some screenshots of the Mortsaver screensaver so you can see what it shows...
Hope this helps - btw the sddialer error I have (my only issue with mortsaver) is that when the sddialer window comes up to prompt for the voice command, the screensaver covers it up immediately - this causes it to close. Either the sddialer needs to be changed so that it can still work when minimized (minimizing it by putting the screensaver on top is what shuts it down) or Mortsaver needs to allow sddialer to override the screensaver...perhaps the screensaver could run in the back...but i spoke to the developer and he didn't seem interested in implementing anything like this...
EDIT: JKingGrim figured out that if you activate mortsaver with a vision connection (either active or dormant), it will not turn off the phone, regardless of your settings; it will only turn the screen off. Which is another primary cause of increased battery drain with mortsaver - i am posting on the developer's forum about this...hopefully we can get a fix for it.
Enjoy,
-jeff

3) Mortsaver when a call is accepted (it shows the countdown again and then power's off the phone - which does not interrupt the call - you can turn the phone back on and disable Mortsaver if you want to use it while in the call - I like this feature because when I receive a call, it turns the phone off for me, so my ear doesn't press anything on the screen - if you didn't know, you can turn the phone off yourself during a call to prevent this.
4) Mortsaver showing that a call has been missed (when you turn the phone on and the screensaver comes up, this is handy because it shows you all the info you need...time, battery, signal, missed calls, missed messages...this way you can decide whether or not you need to deactivate Mortsaver and use the phone or not.
If you need any more info, please let me know. Hope this helps us develop or improve upon the screenlock issue.

Nice job of documenting Mortsaver, Jeff. I might even give it another try myself.
I also wanted to point out that the author of DeltaLock links the source code on his site, so if someone is willing to take a stab at enhancing that program at least a lock program optimized for the 6700's wouldn't be a "from scratch" effort.
After using the new ROM for a week or so now, there is one option I would like the new today screen lock to have... and that is the ability to have it lock the today screen when pushing the sleep/power off button. This would be SOOO handy.

Yep, right now I have simple password set (1111), and tap the power button after every phone call before throwing it in my pocket. I don't use the case because I have an invisible shield screen protector on my screen and I'm not worried about scratches on it.
Tapping power button for the lock feature would be cool

I use password also, but have it set to turn on after 12 hours. This is because Voice Command will not work with the password lock, nor will Speed Dial. So I need to use the today lock. With the today screen lock Voice Command and bluetooth will work, but Speed Dial will not. So after I am done using the phone, I am used to just hitting the power button, but I only would like to have the today screen locked.
It would be nice to find a way to run program while the password lock was in place. Wish there was a registry setting so that we could let some program run in the higher security "mode".
Unfortunately, the screen lock behavior changed between the old rom and this new rom
I used to use the pw feature - set to 0 seconds.. and would hit the power off (or 'toggle screen' using wisbar advance 2) to turn off the screen; when the screen was back on it would active it..
With the new rom, the pw actually kicks in after 1 minute even if you're watching something (i.e. slingplayer, movies, etc..) - so can't be used.. and if you set it to longer, it won't kick in the pw if you turn off ppc/back on.
