I mean, like really. All Im getting from this forum from those who have upgraded, is how "this" no longer works, and "that" is no longer compatible. It seems like the upgrade took us right back to the day this phone was released with no apps providing WM5 support. This is ridiculous. Quick question; Is there anyone who has done this upgrade and been able to use their phone and apps they previously had installed error free?
All I can say is that if you feel that way, just don't upgrade.
I don't know what kind of response you want, but if you're more comfortable with the base release, then stay with it until you decide the fixes and features in the update are worth whatever risk is involved.
You need to read some more and make that decision yourself. I have upgraded and would do it again without hesitation. All of the applications I used previously work fine and the improvments make the upgrade worth it for me.
Yeah and understand that most of us are "fix it forward" types that always HAVE to have the latest and will live with the headaches as long as we're going in the right direction. Most of the apps out there for WM5.0 probably weren't as ready as they should have been to begin with, so this is really a moving target -- as with most things that are bleeding/cutting edge.

I'm not sure why everyone feels as if they're supposed to upgrade. I mean, this is a pretty technical/geeky group of folks. You're going to see a lot of "early adopter" attitudes -- jumping on the bandwagon before it even has wheels. That doesn't mean that everyone needs to. I upgraded, but I really didn't need to. It was more of a challenge for me than anything, and I wanted to see if it would solve my problem of the phone freezing up almost every night, which it seems to have. Ultimately, I probably haven't gained much else from it that I didn't have before... except what appears to be a lower handset volume...
the only reason i haven't upgraded is because of the www.logmein.com issue...which they've said will be fixed this week...
that and the orb issue, which actually wasn't related to this rom upgrade, and is fixed as well.
like elgato said, this is something for "early adopters" to do...sprint has not sent any SMS or whatever to normal users telling us the upgrade is available...we've found out on our own...for a reason...being in touch with the leading edge of technology is quite enjoyable...albeit frustrating at times.
if you quit ignoring them, you will see a lot of people who love the upgrade except for this or that minor thing...

There are a few things that were tweaked that were not to my liking but I'd upgrade again. I'm personally a version junkie and need the newest of whatever the second it comes out. I think the speed of the device alone was worth the upgrade. It seems much snappier than before.

Not only am I a newbie to this forum, but I'm a newbie to owning a phone such as the PPC-6700.
My knee-jerk reaction to hearing that a ROM update came out for the 6700 was to "get it right away!!" Then I began reading about "brick phones" and "loosing one's phone connection" and "hack this" and "change this registry entry".....
Well, since I'm a functional idiot (in this regard, anyway )and wouldn't know what to do if the update didn't go flawlessly, I've now been afraid to even attempt the upgrade. I use my phone for business and simply can't afford to have my phone "disabled" for any length of time...and don't want to be at the mercy of calling advanced tech support...so, here are the question(s)/points that I would appreciate some feedback/input on:
1. If it's not broken, don't fix it!
If your 6700 works fine and you're happy with it, don't risk turning it into a "brick" because you were looking just to satisfy your obsessive-compulsive need to have the "newest and greatest version"...leave well-enough alone.....
2. The upgrade is worth it, so...if you don't have the technichal skill to "fix" your phone if something goes wrong during the upgrade, then take your phone to a Sprint store and have them do it for you and don't leave until your phone is operating at 100%!

Thanks for your input,
David
Except that the employee at the Sprint store is likely to be a moron when it comes to the PPC 6700.
Of course you're going to read all the bad news here, because people are more likely to post when something goes wrong. Most everyone that did the upgrade had no problems and it's working for them and they didn't bother posting about it.
As far as all the hacks and registry edits, the only one I would suggest for non-power users is the "call interrupts EVDO session". And that's not really a hack, it's just a different way of doing a hard reset. All the other hacks aren't really neccesary.
If it ain't broke... Well, it is broke. There are a few bugs that just NEED to be fixed. If you're satisfied with your setup, then don't update it. Maybe you should just wait until the next time you feel the need to hard reset. Then you can update it.
As long as you follow a few rules of thumb, the possibility of bricking your phone is minimal.
1) Don't use a USB hub.
2) Make sure your battery is fully charged
3) Close all running programs
4) Turn off virus scanners and firewalls
5) Don't MUCK with your phone while it's updating.
Follow these rules and your update should go fine.

It sounds like you are a novice user. If your plan is to simply use the phone for phone, email, and built in programs, there is little point to updating now. Even if you plan to add some software, most is unaffected by the update. The EVDO change is vital if EVDO is available in your service area.
As you get more advanced, you will start to see the need for the fixes. Eventually, you will update. We all will, whether we like it or not. As to the process... Robb is bang on with that. Follow recommended procedures and you should be fine.
The one cavaet is that you only want to install ROMS for your chosen carrier. In this case, it's a mute point. But at some point another carrier may have the newest ROM. Your only significant risk occurs when updating to a ROM your carrier doesn't support.
One last question then...earlier Robb mentioned an "EVDO change" what is it and how (exactly) to I go about making this alteration (I'm assuming after the upgrade is complete)?
I did the upgrade and im really happy with it. Just the fact that smart dialer is built in making it easy to find numbers from the keypad like all other versions of this phone is a must. The dialing and buttons react faster there is no delay. You will definitly like it. The before mentioned interupting calls while on EVDO is the only problem that i have really seen and can be fixed so i don't see a big deal.
