I have completely given up any USB connection with all my WM5 devices because of problems with ActiveSync that seem to affect everything not just syncing - probably because of a memory leak somewhere. For each device I have done a backup with Sprite Backup, hard reset, and restored from the backup and then only used my 1and1 Exchange server account from then on to sync the Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks. I handle the notes manually by storing them on the SD card and copying added/changed ones to the SD cards of the other devices using a card reader. My other sync problem was how to maintain SplashID data and using SKTools one is able to export the SplashID database, copy it to the SD cards of the other devices and import from there. This is certainly a lot of trouble and requires one to designate a master Notes file and master SplashID database but it is far easier and quicker than trying to deal with USB AS.
The only other problem is what to do about installing software if you can't get .cab file versions. Most developers will send you a .cab file if you have registered their software. Failing that one can go ahead and execute the .exe install file and at the end you will get the message that the app will install next time the device is connected. Then you can look on your PC hard drive under C:\Program Files or under C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync and find folders for your "to-be-installed" app with the .cab file inside.
Using these procedures, all of my WM5 devices are much more stable and faster as well.
