wifi connection scanning?

This is prolly dumb,,but

When I turn on my wifi, at lot of times I will see 6 or more ap's.

usually I just want to connect to one of the unsecured ones. my problem is that a lot of times when I click on it to connect, it cycles through all of them trying to connect, and doesn't. I tried hitchhiker and I've never once seen it actually pull an ip address from anything.

at first I assumed it was weak signals but tonight where I'm at there are at least 3 ap's with 3 or more bars showing in hitchhiker with no security, but I just can't get this thing to connect. hitchhiker just fails each of them and thengoes to the next one, and can't seem to get the built in stuff to connect either. could be fluctuations in signal strength?
anyone have any suggestions fer me?

New Sprint ROM tells secured/unsecured status in popup when networks are detected so you can choose accordingly. I don't really need WiFiFoFum anymore (great program, though).

that's cool & I plan to do the rom update tommorow, but my issue is that it just cycles through them all, secured or not.

You can get Socket Wifi companion, it's the only wifi scanner I've been able to find for WM5. Try the trial it works great.
