6700 will not turn on sometimes (have to soft reset)

I've had my PPC6700 for about 3 weeks, and every couple days, when I try to turn the phone on from standby (pressing power button once), the unit will not power on. I have to soft reset the device, and when it comes on, the backlight is always set to off.

Anyone have this problem, and know why it is doing it?

This sounds like the DSOD or a variant.

Search and read the stickies above and there is info, but no fully functional answer yet.

Perhaps the ROM upgrades will help if/when they are available (SPCS is available now).

Good Luck,

Bob DUckworth

Mine just started doing this the past 2 days after having the phone for 5 months. The only new piece of software I installed was the Agile Messenger Alpha. Could they be related?

Its possible, in fact, likely if that's the scenario that you have. Did you install it in the memory or on the SD card? Seems apps that have to access their file frequently or constantly are best installed into memory as accessing the SD card seems to be a problem when waking the device up from a suspended state.

No hard answers for you, just what I seem to remember from reading the post in the stickies.

Good Luck,

Bob Duckworth

i myself had koko's silver gold theme on mine and i just did a hard reset on my device and it seems to be working pretty well (not saying that kokos theme was at fault). is there a way to close WMP on the 6700? because i like to have as few apps open at one time, and about the whole accessing the sd, WMP is always accessing my sd. i know i can go to the system memory and shut it down, and i do if it starts to run slow, is there a quicker way to close it?

I have found that when this happens, just pop out the SD card, wait a few seconds and pop it back in. Something freezes the system when trying to wake with the SD card in it.

I have the xv6700 and have experienced the same problem. I have to plug in to external power and reset the brightness setting for battery.

Interesting. I have had mine for about a month and mine also starting doing this just the last 2 days. Any chance an update of some sort got pushed out by verizon? I cant imagine that would have (or could have) happened.

You've got to be kiddin me!!

Well I guess we're all one more to add to the list. I love this phone, but what the f#$^&k... You pay all this money for something that you have to soft reset 4-6 times a day??? My other phone was the Samsung I-730, wow, what a great phone, (w/the exception of not having a camera). The reception on this phone sucks compared to the Samsung. The speakerphone is horrific.. What will the next piece of crap be, better I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw in another thread that the SD card could be causing the problem. Next time it happens pop it out, give it a second, and see what happens. If it doens't work for me, I'm calling Verizon for a new replacement. Maybe all that money I've paid for insurance will pay off...

Paul

For those who end up with their backlight turned down or off, but the phone is still operating, try holding down the power button for a couple seconds. That will reactivate the backlight at a default setting. At least it does on my phone...I don't know if an app added that or if it is something built into the phone or WM 5.0...just something I remember reading somewhere (probably somewhere in this forum).

If that does work, that'll keep you from having to plug it in or find a well lit area to see the screen and reset the backlight yourself.

This has been happening to me quite a bit lately. I found two things surrounding this problem.

1.) The new display lock sucks. If you have a program like weather panel or Outlook that needs to make web connections, or you use Sprint Business Connect (this is the Outlook issue) then you will get hosed. IF and only IF you have Business Connect or Weather Panel installed to the SD card. For some reason, the display lock hangs. I disabled the display lock and I have not had near the problems I had before.

2.) This is a SD card issue. Everytime I get hung up, I pop the SD card and Walla!!! the PPC comes back to life with either a Business Connect error or a weather panel error.

Sprint needs to release a new version of Business Connect IMO.

Thumbs up

I wanted to echo Drxenon's comments. I have the xv6700 and it does appear not to turn back on. But, if I hold the power down for 3 seconds, and repeat that a few times, it always eventually comes back on. I never have to soft reset to fix this. And, I don't own an SD card so that isn't the cause of the problem. I think sometimes it just lags and doesn't register the power button for several seconds. Hope this helps!

a lot of people who think they are experiencing DSOD are actually just having their backlight turned off by holding down the power button and not being able to see the screen...whether it's on or off.

make sure you verify that you have DSOD by holding the power button down for a few seconds and/or getting a closer look at the screen with good lighting to see if it's actually on...

if that doesn't work, popping out your SD card is the next likely fix.

after that, soft reset if you still can't get anything.

i'm hesitant to assume that just because popping out the SD card wakes the phone up, it is, itself, the cause of the DSOD. you will notice that when your phone is functioning properly, and is in the off/standby mode, if you remove the SD card it will wake the phone immediately...therefore it might just be the coincidence of the SD card having that effect that is causing it to wake the phone for you.

that being said, i think it is likely to be the SD card - just not saying case closed. it only happens to me once every couple of days and it's not that big of a deal in my opinion...if it's happening more often it's because of your configuration and i can see how that would be very annoying.

good luck,

-jeff
