Upgrading Verizon or other carrier's 6700 with the Sprint ROM??
If you have messed around with this process on the 6600, you will know that its possible to flash your rom with various carriers roms.
I extracted the upgrade, and I can see the .nbf for the WinCE rom, and the Radio rom, along with the Sprint customizations. I am hoping it is as simple as replacing the sprint cab for customizations with the verizon one, or removing the sprint stuff from the cab that obviously wont work on Verizon, and use older cabs from the VZW customizations.
The three rom updates, are ms_.nbf, nk.nbf, and radio_.nbf. The cab file is PPST_SPCS.sa.cab, and it all has the same structure and update software that we had on our 6600 projects.
I am not sure what flashing both .nbf files will do to my phone, but the only thing holding me back is that I don't have a copy of the original VZW rom in case I futz things up.
I have worked up the nerve to just try and run the update, and I figured it wouldn't work, and I was right. You get an error basically telling you that this upgrade isn't for this device, so some trickery will need to happen to force it on the device.
Although Ehud hosted info and roms, I will not directly link to his site, unless told I can, but you can peruse the thread that contains the info needed to start rom hacking/cooking on the 6600, and it should apply to what we are trying here....
I emailed UTStarcomm for the heck of it, and they said that VZW and other carriers are testing yet, and there should be a release in the next couple weeks. Apparently Sprint is ahead of the pack, since they released the device first.
I may hold off, but I don't trust Verizon to release this in a timely manner for some reason.
Currently, my XV6700 is working great, and I never like to be on the "breeding edge" (got burned way too many times). Therefore, I am not that eager to get any upgrade.
Anyone know anything about the Qwest 6700 version?
Qwest runs on the same network as Sprint. So far the largest difference I've found between the 2 versions is the lack of crapware in the Ext_Rom. Also there is no "Roaming" listed on my services menu.
How close a fit does anyone suppose the Sprint upgrade would be?
Thanks so much for posting that! I was eager to try the Buttonlock but it installed and apparently did nothing... oh well, gonna mess around some more.
Does anyone have info on when or if there will be a telusmoiblity release?
I tired probing the telus data support team and they said that they don't release that sort of information.. So no confirmation or denial at this point.
Looking at the Telus material for this phone they don't seem to state anywhere that it is upgradable to PUSH email unlike some of the US carriers.. So they might not feel presured to provide the update.
Telus has a history of not providing updates -- my Kyocera 7135 came with an older firmware and they did not release the new one (fixed a lot of crash bugs), I had to manually update it with a "pirated" version I downloaded from someone on this site
I will put pressure on them and I think all of you should too. When I last asked them a few weeks ago, they said that no information was available.
For what it's worth, the Telus ROM was newer than both Verison's and Sprint's. This isn't to say I don't want it, only to present that some of the patch fixes issues we don't have. Unfortunately, that may mean that we are less likely to get the upgrade through conventional means.
I called Verizon, and you'd expect, the support people were clueless. They had no idea there was a ROm update, no information about if Verizon was testing, when it might be available, etc.
