Yes, this is correct for the vast majority of people. The only exception is for those who are right on the border of a very weak EV-DO signal (in which case the phone will try to prefer this weak signal over a stronger 1x signal, and will contantly ping-pong back and forth between the two). For those few, it may be best to set the phone to 1x only just so you can properly use the phone and maintain decent battery life. The consequence is that EV-DO will not be available, but it's not likely a permanent situation, as Sprint continues to roll out new EV-DO base stations all the time.
For all practical purposes, the EVDO (only) setting is never appropriate, since it will prevent the phone part of your 6700 from working.
I'm sure this is why that page is normally hidden.
Thanks for the assist, I've been so swamped that I haven't had a chance to get the picture posted.

From the sounds of things , I will wait a long time before the bugs in this update are done. Since I got my speed dialer from Kokkos, I really don't think I need any of the socalled improvements that the ROM update have. I don't think I want to mess up a nicely functioning phone M Drexker
Not sure why you'd wait. I did the update and had absolutely zero problems and the new update is fantastic. I have not had to do any soft resets at all since installing and before update I used to have to soft update numerous times during the day. This is a fantastic update. Not sure why folks are having problems with it but the poll shows the vast majority are having very few problems.
Dumb question here: I somehow got into the Hybrid setting once before by accident. I can't for the life of me get back there......wherever there is?? Could you please tell me how to get into those settings?? Thanks.

Settings > Phone > Mode of Operation then click get settings.
I also had the same question about how to change to hybrid mode.
I did as you said and went:
Settings>phone>services Mode of Operation was not a choice.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Glenn

The poll was taken when the update first came out and is indicative of the actual process of updating... now after the excitement is wearing down and a couple of days have set in with several probs being abundant such as screwing up the handset volume to satisfy the speaker phone problem and adding a lock feature but only being able to access it by taking up and entire row on the today screen and evidently making dsod worse (cause I never had it before and now I do) and screwing up certain things like the activesync hack simply put they giveth and taketh on this update. I think that may be what that person was referring to. Other than that the update is cool and added a lot of nice features... I fell in love with my 6700 all over again.
I installed the ROM upgrade Saturday March 18th. Everything installed just like everyone said it would, I did the soft reset and the phone no longer worked. I went into the Sprint store and they replaced the phone.

In order to make the "Mode of Operation" visible, you need to do this registry edit:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting
Change the option HiddenPreferenceMode from 1 to 0
Then go to Phone, Options, and check in the list. You can now change the preference of operation. You have 3 choices, Hybrid, EVDO, and 1X
Hybrid is the best setting if you're in an EV-DO area, IMHO.
For all practical purposes, the EVDO (only) setting is never appropriate, since it will prevent the phone part of your 6700 from working.

I think it would be useful to enable this feature if you are using the data connection or tethering and do NOT want to be interrupted by phone calls - in this case you would select EVDO only...
...doesn't this seem like a better idea than Sprint enabling DDTM by default and forcing us into this situation?
Though it's not entirely clear to me yet, as no one seems to know exactly what DDTM is, why it's there, and how to change it without re-provisioning the phone, it seems like DDTM is a compromise that allows the phone to still work but to prevent EVDO from being interrupted. I think this would have been better implemented if it were one of the options (ie. EVDO, Hybrid, Hybrid DDTM, 1x).
oh well...

sorry you went through this hassle but it seems like you jumped the gun on getting your phone replaced...though i guess nothing was lost on your side, it seems clear from this thread that anyone who bricked their phone with this update was able to recover using the boot loader and get the phone running again...

How do you access the bootloader on the 6700?.....what is the button sequence?

I'll probably give it a go later. I'm on my way out to for a bit...and maybe a few beers to work up the courage to actually try to force this Sprint ROM on my Telus device.

Best to all,

I didn't have to do this. Once I go to Settings->phone->options, I hit "get settings" and sometimes it seems to pull up a random setting. I scroll up and down in the list (making sure nothing's selected), hit "get settings" again and it takes me to this screen.
Out of curiousty.... though I see detailed instructions that appear to go on and on with 20 different variations has something gone wrong with the easy way or knocking junkware out of this ROM update that Im not aware of? Just soft resetting when the screen comes up to say sprint cabs will install in 3 seconds and then just installing the cabs you want? Seems like everyone is taking a lot of unneccesary steps for nothing

From what I can tell, there are just a bunch more cab. files this time around. The list of items to install/keep with the ROMv1 was a little longer than the list of cab. files to remove this time (*not long).
These are the ones to keep Romv2:
AutoRun.exe
ButtonLock.sa.CAB
Cert_SPCS.CAB
Cert_SPCS.sa.CAB
Config.txt (modified of course)
Customize_SPCS.sa.CAB
DirectShow.sa.CAB
Enable_RingTone.sa.CAB
IOTA.sa.CAB
PhoneSetting_HelpFile.sa.CAB
PowerICON.sa.CAB
PP_ErrCodeForSPCS_Apache_206300.sa.CAB
PP_HTC_CM_Guardian_Apache_206300.sa.CAB
PP_IOTA_v1_10_Apache_206300.sa.CAB
PP_Version_Apache_206300.sa.CAB
PT_RemoveHTCBatteryICON_Apache_206300.sa.CAB
ResString.sa.CAB
RTPlugin_CDMA.sa.CAB
Sprint_Logo.bmp
TimeSnyc.sa.CAB
And the ones that are junk ROMv2:
CAB: \Extended_ROM\WTLAudiblePlayerPocketPC.arm.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\AudibleSample.sa.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\sprint_software_store.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\GetGL.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Disable_RemoveProgram.sa.CAB

I for one went through the "unneccessary steps" because I wanted to fully customize what gets installed on a hard reset. I ran two programs. One to unlock, another to unhide my Ext_ROM. Originally I unhid without unlocking and that's what gave me so many problems. Long story short, if something were to go terribly wrong with my phone, I could now hard reset and all of the necessary Sprint stuff and all of my programs would automatically reinstall. I then do an activesync to get my contacts and such back and I am back in business. Just makes my life easier and more worry free to know that a rebuild is three buttons away.
