Yes it's that time again. For those new to the procedure, here's how you do it:
1. You must notify Sprint that you wish to receive the PRL update. There are two known ways to do this:
a. Call *2 from your phone and press 1 for English. At the next prompt say "P-R-L Update" and wait for a rep to answer. Then ask the rep to flag your number for a PRL update. If the rep replies with anything other than OK (or equivalent) try calling again. Some reps seem to be clueless about the subject but most will gladly do it for you.
b. Send Sprint CS an e-mail and ask to be flagged for the update. http://www1.sprintpcs.com/learn/form...c_question.jsp. You should receive an e-mail reply within a couple of hours stating that you have been flagged.
2. Once you've been flagged, call *2 (again), press 1 for English and listen for the message saying "We have recognized that a free update to your Sprint service is needed...". If you do not hear that message then your account was not flagged correctly. You will need to call/e-mail and ask again. Assuming you do hear that message, look at your phone display (ignore the continued voice prompts--they are just a timed recorded message and do not really indicate anything) and look for the following signs that your PRL is being updated:
a. Yellow "updating" text appears on your phone pad screen
b. After the PRL is downloaded you will hear a couple of extremely loud beeps (don't hold the phone next to your ear during this process!)
c. The phone will prompt you to soft reset after the beeps via a "bubble" notification at the bottom of the screen. If you do not acknowledge the bubble, it will automatically soft reset after 15 seconds.
3. Once the phone resets you should be able to go to Start->Settings->System (tab)->Device Information and look at your PRL version, which should read 20219. If it doesn't say 20219 then call *2 and try again. You do not have to repeat step 1... your account will stay flagged until the PRL update actually completes.
Mine took on the first attempt. No word yet on changes.
For a short and sweet answer to the "what is a PRL" question, check out PhoneScoop. Those seeking more information can google "PRL roaming" for more info.
To be clear, PRL updates are always optional and rarely make a noticeable difference to the end user. Furthermore they will not correct bugs in the 6700, add push e-mail, stereo bluetooth, or picturemail. PRLs concern themselves solely with telling your phone which towers it should prefer to talk to--that's it. Not very exciting, in other words.
Happy PRL updating!
Edit: There have been a couple of reports of people having actually received the PRL without the normal signs (yellow text, beeps, soft reset). If when you call back, you no longer get the "free update" messages but get the normal Claire menu, hang up, soft reset and check your device information screen to verify that you've received the updated version. If not, you'll have to call/e-mail and get flagged again.

just updated mine...it took on the first try...first time that's happened...and here i was all geared up for about 40 attempts like last time...lol
the difficult thing this time was getting a rep to flag me - first what...3 or 4 times...the first rep i called flagged me - this time i had 4 different reps...first one said she did it but it didn't recognize my phone when i called *2 after i hung up...the next 3 all said "we can't do it for this phone because it's EVDO so we're going to transfer you to the EVDO department" - first two times that happened i hung up and tried again...third time i let them transfer me...then that rep said they had to transfer me to tech support....then tech support said she didn't know if she was allowed to do it on this phone...but then decided she could...and then it was done.
just shows you how messed up sprints customer service is...but we already knew that.

It won't work for me because I have Sprint for my home service.
Hey, an updated PRLl may be good for those Sprint coverage holes in your home area (like in the lobby of my work in downtown San Francisco where i always use VZ)
funny thing this time (the third EVDO PRL update for my 6700). I called and got the CSR to flag my account. Then called back in, pressed 1 for english and got the prompt that Sprint has recognized that I need a software update and to stay on the line while the update is in progress. I never got the notification that the reset was needed...the voice prompt went to the time out and Claire came back to ask what I needed next.
I assumed that I would need to retry the call. I called back in and unlike the other time before the sprint network did not recognize that my 6700 needed the update any longer. So, I looked at the PRL and indeed I was still at 20218. I then reset the phone manually and when it came back it was at 20219.
The process for the update may no longer have the on screen notification of the reset to complete the update any longer or for some reason the network did not signal the message to my phone.
Happily, it worked the first time this round.

Nice help, chill. I sent the email, too. My version was 20217 and i just bought the phone two days ago.
O.T.: What does it update when it turns on for the first time, then??

I really wonder if it is a coincidence or something in there system that determines if an update will occur. The first PRL update took 13 tries. The second -I had tried 35 phone calls last time and it just didn't update although the voice at Sprint said it was occuring. I'd hang up after they said this if I didn't get the yellow update text on my phone. This time it happened first try!
I find it hard to believe the idiots at Sprint who can't get a PRL update to be reliable actually found a flaw in the AKU2 update. I'm guessing more likely it sat on someones desk, they didn't get around to testing it so they claimed it had flaws so they'd have time to actually test it.
I got flagged and called *2. It said I was due for free update and said wait. then it said done and call will continue. Then the auto girl came on and I hung up. soft reset, and still PRL version 20217. What did I do wrong??

I didn't have to call to get my phone flagged, however, it's doing the same thing that PRL 20218 did to most of us, say it has been updated but it really hasn't. Here we go again....
Let me stress that you should totally ignore the prompts saying "your phone is being updated", "the update is still in progress", "the update is complete". These are absolutely 100% meaningless, and are just there to keep you on the line for a set duration of time.
The true signs that the update "took" are the things I mentioned above - yellow text, loud beeps, soft reset. If you don't get those then you need to call back.
