Here's a quick question, since the 6700 doesn't have any RAM and is purely based off of Flash Memory, wouldn't something that is buffered like streaming video/audio wear out the flash memory? Flash memory, as some of you already know, 'wears out' after a certain number of reads and writes. Now if you're streaming audio/video player, the stream is buffered and is written and read many times which would wear out the flash memory rather quickly right?
I stream music over WiFi from www.shoutcast.com to an app called GSPlayer with no problem. Works great, no issues even when I'm walking around my office.
streaming does infact use ram purely. The ppc 6700 does have ram, 64 megabytes infact.
try to stream something and you can clearly see the ram usage increase once streaming starts (assuming media player is already open)
so there is no constant read/writing while streaming at all.
Think more along the lines of a bucket with a leak in the bottom that you hold under running water. It's gonna fill up. But that doesn't mean it's not constantly flowing.
Flash memory will last a lifetime... thats one of the selling points. Theres merely no such thing as wear and tear via flash mem. No moving parts, etc... Some computer hard drive and RAM companies are interested in incorporating the technology into their components for this reason.
Sorry to burst your bubble (partially anyway) but flash does wear out during writes. You can typically write to a flash "cell" a limited number of times before that "cell" becomes unusable (think magnetic tape). You can read it all you want without any ill affects but writing to it is completely different.
The good news is that there are a LOT of these flash "cells" and manufacturers use special algorithms to spread the load. In any case 6700 has RAM in it for program execution purposes (i.e. not really user accessible).

Older memory flash memory.....
Or they ran software off of their flash on a computer....
But you can definately wear it out...this is why they arent using it in computer harddrives.....
Both have limited lifespans....NAND gates and cylinders.....
Harddrives dont get bothered much by number of write cycles....they just wear down mechanically.
Flash actually develops a breakdown.....it physically breaks down with multiple writes...(think about EEPROM) if your familiar.....
Basically flash works great for limited writing....but long term usage
Moving harddrives work best for continual usage....
Computers love hard drives....
MP3 players, cameras, and everything else that doesnt use continual write/read will last longer on flash......but if you continually run software off of your flash...you are slowly killing it.....
buy your flash memory from a repuatble company that will honor their lifetime warranty. Problem solved! (make backups too!)
man, verbatim really screwed up when they gave me a lifetime warranty on my floppy disks back in 1990. I've been RMA 'ing the same 100 disks for the last 16 years
